Lancaster Stormers News Release
The battles between the Lancaster Barnstormers and Bridgeport Bluefish are becoming epic.
On Monday evening, two of them went Bridgeport's way.
Pinch hitter Hiram Bocachica singled home Danny Putnam with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Bluefish topped the Barnstormers, 2-1, in a regularly scheduled nine-inning game.
Three hours earlier, Tom Pennino stroked a bases-loaded single to deep left center to knock Joe Jiannetti across with the decisive tally, giving Bridgeport a 5-4, 10-inning win in a game suspended from July 21.
The twin losses, combined with York's 8-4 win over Somerset, cut Lancaster's lead back to one game in the Freedom Division.
Putnam led off the ninth inning with a single to left off starter Josh Hall (9-5). Putnam advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Tike Redman walked to put runners at first and second. Colin Roberson skied to shallow right, and Hall worked ahead of Bocachica, who was pinch hitting for Tim Johnson, at 0-2. The count worked back to 2-2 before Bocachica smashed a single into left. Putnam beat Reggie Taylor's throw home as the Bluefish improved their August record to 8-1.
Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead off Hall in the third. Joe Jiannetti beat out an infield hit to the hole at shortstop. One out later, Brandon Chaves looped a single into shallow left. Jiannetti beat an off balance throw to third, and Chaves sprinted into second behind the play. Adam Greenberg brought home the run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Lancaster answered with one out in the fourth on Jason Perry's 21st homer of the season, a blast to deep right center field.
The Barnstormers had chances to take the lead in the seventh and eighth innings. Singles by Taylor and Lloyd Turner and a walk to newcomer Brett Flowers loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. Octavio Martinez bounced into a 6-4 force play to close the inning.
In the eighth, with starter Kevin Mannix still in the game, Michael Woods crunched a one-out ground rule double to left center. Perry grounded out to the right side, sending Woods to third. Luis Rodriguez saved the run with a diving stop of a wide pitch in the midst of a walk to Aaron Herr. Reggie Taylor bounced out to second to end the threat.
Hall went the distance on a six-hitter with three walks and six strikeouts. Mannix was lifted after eight innings, having allowed six hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Chris Rivera (4-3) worked the ninth to pick up the win.
The suspended game was picked up in the bottom of the seventh with the score tied, 4-4. Lancaster managed only one baserunner in their three turns at the plate, while Bridgeport applied pressure to both Charlie Weatherby and Tim Hamulack. The dam finally burst against Hamulack (4-4) in the 10th. Jiannetti led off with a single to left and took third on a double down the left field line by Bocachica. Hamulack fanned Roberson and intentionally walked Luis Lopez to load the bases, bringing up Pennino. The left-hander visibly reacted when a 2-2 pitch was called a ball. After a full count foul ball, Pennino hit a deep drive to left center over the shallow outfielders to produce the win.
Lancaster concludes its eight-day road trip with a 7:05 start against Bridgeport on Tuesday evening. Jose Sanchez (4-8) will get the start for the Barnstormers against Matt Pike (9-4).
