'Crabs Knock Newark

(Waldorf, M.D., Aug. 10, 2010) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Newark Bears 8-2 Tuesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland to take the first two games of the series.

The Blue Crabs jumped on top against starter Mike Loree in the home third. Jeremy Owens singled to center and came around to score on a RBI double off the bat of Ben Harrison, who was cut down at third on a 9-4-5 putout. Southern Maryland broke the game open in the next frame batting around the order. A single and two hit batters loaded the bases, but Loree was able to come with two straight strikeouts and appeared out of the inning. Eric Crozier, though drew a RBI walk followed a two-run error off the bat of Travis Garcia and a Jeremy Owens' RBI single gave the 'Crabs a five-run advantage, 5-0.

Newark came back with a run off Craig Anderson and snapped the shutout in the fourth. Elijah Dukes, who was reactivated prior to the game, picked up his second hit of night and plated Brian Barton with a bloop single to right. Shaun Cumberland got the run back for the 'Crabs with a solo shot out to right in the home half inning.

The Bears didn't back down as Randy Gress legged out a three-base error to start the fifth on a ball misplayed by the third baseman. Tim Raines Jr. collected his first RBI as a Bear with a sacrifice fly to center to pull Newark within four runs. Southern Maryland plated a run in the sixth on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice and throwing error in the seventh added a late insurance run.

Anderson (8-2) fired seven innings, allowing an earned run and four hits, with two strikeouts in the victory. Loree (4-9) was dealt the loss, allowing six runs, three earned, and six hits, while striking out four over five innings. Jason Waddell and Bryan Dumesnil tossed two scoreless frames in relief with two strikeouts and just one hit.

The Bears and Blue Crabs square off in game three of the series on Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Fans can tune into all the action at www.newarkbears.com with David Greenwald providing the play-by-play. The Bears return home a short three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday, August 17. Game time is set for 11:05 a.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 10:05 a.m. to accommodate the "Camp Day" festivities.
