Lancaster Stormers News Release
Jake Hale fired a complete game, five-hit shutout on Sunday afternoon as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers, 1-0, in the third game of a four-game series.
The Barnstormers have dropped six straight and nine of their last 10 on the road and sit eight games behind the Blue Crabs in the Freedom Division.
Hale (4-1), who lost to the Barnstormers, 7-0, three weeks earlier at Clipper Magazine Stadium, yielded five singles and three walks that were well scattered throughout the game. Lancaster managed to place one runner into scoring position on the afternoon and only had one leadoff runner aboard in the game. The right-hander struck out seven.
The Barnstormers best chance to score came in the second. With one out, Chris Garcia blooped a single to left that barely eluded the grasp of a diving Casey Frawley. Keith Castillo followed with a walk, but Hale struck out Tyler Bortnick swinging and got Lance Zawadzki to hit into a force play to end the threat.
Brandon Jones, who picked up two of Lancaster's five hits, singled to open the sixth but was erased on a double play when Brian Cavazos-Galvez lined to Frawley at short with one out in the inning.
Southern Maryland reached Shunsuke Watanabe (1-2) for its lone run in the third. Daryle Ward rapped a leadoff single into center and took third when Jamar Walton laced a double over Bortnick's head and down the left field line. Frawley walked to load the bases, and Antone DeJesus picked up the run with a sacrifice fly to center. Zach Wilson walked with two outs to reload the bags, but Watanabe retired Hankerd on a pop up to get out of the inning.
The Lancaster right-hander allowed only three hits in seven innings while walking two and fanning six. Southern Maryland did not send more than three men to the plate in any other inning against Watanabe but did leave a runner at third with Zach Jackson on the hill in the eighth.
Casey Fossum (0-0) will make the start on Monday afternoon at 1:05 against right-hander Shaun Garceau (1-2) in the series finale.
