Big Inning Haunts Revs As Losing Streak Continues
May 24, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution got off to a quick start on Sunday afternoon but were victimized by one ugly inning as the Somerset Patriots claimed a 9-5 victory at Santander Stadium in front of 3,612 fans. The Revs have dropped a season-high six straight overall, slipping to 10-19. Somerset improves to a league-best 21-8 having won 13 of their last 15 games. The Revs will look to salvage the final game of their homestand on Memorial Day afternoon, Monday at 5 p.m.
The Revs built a 3-0 lead early in the game. Mikey Reynolds led off the first with a single to right, moved up a base on a wild pitch, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Boggs, and scored on a groundout to first by Eric Patterson who has an RBI in four of his last five games. Then in the second, Shannon Wilkerson led off with a single to left and scored on a two-out double down the right field line by Luis De La Cruz. Willie Cabrera followed with a double deep off the digital boards in left-center, plating De La Cruz.
Somerset took advantage of one sloppy inning from the Revs in the third, scoring seven times to take control of the game. Things got off on the wrong foot when Scott Kelly hit a tapper back to the mound, and Shawn Hill's throw to first base sailed high for an error. Jonny Tucker followed with a single, and both runners advanced on a double steal when the ball slipped out of third baseman Bryan Pounds' glove on his attempted tag. With one out, both scored on a double to right-center by Thomas Neal, which preceded a game-tying RBI double to left by Chris Marrero who extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games. Mat Gamel then lofted a bloop single to left, plating Marrero with the go-ahead run. Another error kept things rolling for the Patriots, who took advantage with an RBI single to right by Nate Spears. Adam Donachie then grounded one back to the mound, but on an attempted inning-ending double play, Hill's throw pulled Patterson off second base, while the relay to first sailed wide resulting in two errors on the play and another run scoring. Kelly then legged out another attempted double play, picking up an RBI on a fielder's choice. The Patriots scored four unearned runs on four errors in the frame, supplemented by five hits.
York got one back in the third on an RBI double down the third base line by Wilkerson with two outs in the inning.
Somerset responded as Gamel connected on a two-run homer to right in the fourth.
Boggs singled to left, plating a run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but neither team scored the rest of the way.
York got to Somerset starter Matt Zielinski for five runs on eight hits in four innings, but reliever David Harden (2-1) earned the win with four scoreless innings.
Hill (1-3) suffered the loss for York, charged with nine runs (five earned) on 10 hits in four innings.
York's bullpen was also solid as Leyson Septimo, Matt Neil, Stephen Penney, Josh Judy, and Edward Paredes all tossed scoreless innings.
Notes: The Revs fall to 0-6 against the Patriots on the season. York's five errors tied the most in a game in Revs history for the seventh time; the last time occurred in a home game against the Patriots on May 28, 2014. The Revs' franchise record home losing streak is extended to 11 consecutive games. The Revs will try to avoid their first winless homestand of six games or longer when they conclude the seven-game stay on Monday with righty Anthony Lerew (2-1, 4.06) facing Somerset right-hander Lucas Irvine (1-3, 1.35). It is Salute to Veterans Night presented by NAPA Auto Care Center. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
