Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers belted four home runs, and Chris Schwinden wove his way through seven shutout innings on Monday evening as Lancaster stymied the host Somerset Patriots, 7-0, in the opener of a four-game series at TD Bank Park.
Lancaster stayed within one game of the division leading York Revolution with six left on the schedule. Meanwhile, the Barnstormers victory over the Patriots gave the Long Island Ducks a temporary reprieve in the Liberty Division, pending the outcome of the Ducks' second game against Bridgeport.
Cole Garner gave the Barnstormers a jump with his league topping 14th home run of the season, a solo blast to left center with two outs in the first. Wilson Batista tacked on the team's second homer, a laser to right leading off the second for a 2-0 edge against Erik Arnesen (7-4).
The Barnstormers pulled away in the seventh. Batista ripped a double to the base of the fence in right and took third when Brock Kjeldgaard drilled a single past shortstop. Lance Zawadzki picked up one run with a sacrifice fly to center. Following Juan Apodaca's single to shallow center, Casey Frawley smoked a three-run homer to left center for a 6-0 Barnstormers advantage.
Zawadzki capped the barrage with a solo blast to left in the ninth.
Schwinden dodged trouble all night, using Somerset designated hitter Corey Smith as his escape route.
In the first, Jonny Tucker doubled to left, and Mike Wilson singled to center, giving the Patriots runners at the corners with one out. Smith hit a comebacker for a 1-4-3 double play. Two innings later, with two in scoring position and two out, Smith popped to second. The New Jersey native stepped in again with the bases full and one down in the fifth and struck out looking. As Schwinden's last batter of the night, Smith followed back-to-back, two-out singles in the seventh with a lazy fly to center to close out another threat.
Altogether, Smith, who had knocked in six runs in the first seven games against Lancaster this season, left nine runners on base.
Schwinden (7-1) allowed nine total hits with Tucker's first inning double the only one for more than a single. The right-hander walked one and struck out four.
Cory Wade faced one batter over the minimum in the final two innings to complete the shutout.
Somerset plays host to the Barnstormers again on Tuesday. Brandon Mann (1-0) will get the start for the Barnstormers against fellow lefty Matt Maloney (3-3). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
