Skeeters Take Down Riversharks 5-3 in Series Opener

Sugar Land took down Camden 5-3 in the opening game of the series tonight at Constellation Field. With the win tonight, the Skeeters now hold a 4-1 record against the Riversharks so far this season and improve to 34-29 overall in 2014.

Clint Everts (6.0,7,3,3,3,4) allowed three runs to score on seven hits and collected four strikeouts in his 6.0 innings pitched. Everts earned his second win of 2014 and improves to a 2-6 record so far this season.

Left fielder Ryan Langerhans (2x3, R) led off the bottom of the first inning with a hard-hit single to left field. The next batter, shortstop Taylor Harbin (0x3), laid down a bunt and reached base on an error by the Camden first baseman, which allowed Langerhans to advance to third. A line-drive single to left field from right fielder Brian Barton (1x4, 2 RBI) brought Langerhans home for the first run of the game.

Catcher Danny Lehmann (2x2, R, 2 RBI) and Langerhans both got on base with a pair of walks to start the bottom of the third. Harbin then followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position as Barton stepped up to the plate. Barton then gave up a groundball to the Rivershark third baseman, but not before Lehmann crossed home plate for run number two of the night.

First baseman Travis Scott (1x3, R) started off the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk before second baseman Delwyn Young (1x4, R) roped a single to right field, which moved Scott into scoring position on second base. Designated hitter Nick Stavinoha (0x4) followed up with a sacrifice hit to the third baseman that allowed Scott to score the tying run. Third baseman Dominic Ramos (1x4, R, RBI) sliced a line drive down the left field line and advanced Young to third. Center fielder Adam Godwin (0x2) was hit by a pitch, which loaded up the bases for Lehmann. Lehmann was able to capitalize on the juiced bases and brought in Young and Ramos with a line drive to left field, giving the Skeeters a 5-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Lefty Cory VanAllen (1.0,0,0,0,0,1) entered the game in the top of the seventh and collected one strikeout without allowing a run or a hit in his frame. Brian Broderick (1.0,0,0,0,0,1) put up identical numbers after pitching 1.0 inning of the game in the eighth. Closer Gary Majewski (1.0,1,0,0,0,1) was able to preserve the win for the home team after collecting his 12th save of the season tonight.

Back at Home Again:

The Skeeters will take on the Riversharks for the second time this series tomorrow night with game time set for 7:05 p.m. CT. at Constellation Field. Steve Hammond (3-5, 3.85 ERA) will start on the hill for Sugar Land as the team looks to take their second win of the home stand and improve to 5-1 against Camden so far this season.
