Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers, fresh off a 7-0 road trip, ran into a rather nasty flock of Ducks on their return home Tuesday night.
Those Ducks banged out 20 hits, including a pair of home runs, in ending the Barnstormers' season-high winning streak, 11-5, at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Kraig Binick and Josh Barfield paced the Long Island attack with four hits apiece while Joash Brodin tacked on three.
The loss dropped the Barnstormers 3 1/2 games behind Sugar Land in the second half race in the Freedom Division.
Each team scored a run on a force play grounder in the first inning, but Long Island busted the game open in the third. Barfield and Bryant Nelson greeted Rich Rundles (3-1) with ringing singles, and Bill Hall lofted a three-run homer onto the picnic deck. Ramon Castro singled, and Ryan Strieby walked to extend the rally, still with nobody out. Rundles got two quick outs, but Lancaster missed out on a chance to turn a double play on Adam Bailey's grounder to second. They paid a price as Binick doubled into the left field corner for a 6-1 lead.
The onslaught continued in the fourth inning. Singles by Barfield and Nelson and a walk to Hall spelled the end of the night for Rundles. Ross Peeples took over and got a quick double play, started on a diving stop by third baseman Jason Taylor. However, Strieby came up with a single to drive in Nelson to advance the Ducks lead to 8-1. Bailey slammed a two-run homer to right center, and the Ducks held a 10-1 advantage.
Matt Way (4-5) worked five innings, yielding six hits and three walks, but only one run. Four Long Island right-handers covered one inning each. Lancaster struck for four runs in the eighth, three on a double into the left field corner by Ryan Harvey, to cut the lead to 10-5. Long Island picked up three two-out singles in the ninth for the final tally.
Lancaster sends Will Savage (7-9) to the hill on Wednesday night against left-hander Bill Murphy (2-11). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
