AtL Lancaster Stormers

Barnstormers beaten in blink

August 24, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Within a span of four batters in the second inning, Monday night's game was over.

Bridgeport scored six unearned runs in that short stretch and defeated the host Barnstormers, 6-0, in front of 3,209 in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Ben Fritz (4-6) ran into trouble early in the second but appeared to pitch his way out of the jam. Jesse Hoorelbeke led off with a double crushed off the wall in left center. Fritz hit Brandon Sing with a pitch, and both runners moved ahead on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Rodriguez. Wilson Batista fought for awhile before squibbing a grounder to third baseman Aaron Herr. A throw to the plate cut down Hoorelbeke for the second out. Batista, safe at first on the fielder's choice was put into motion, and Enohel Polanco hit a bouncer past the mound. Second baseman Cesar Suarez fumbled the ball for an error as Sing scored for a 1-0 lead.

Ryner Bautista drove an RBI double off the right field wall to score Batista for a 2-0 lead. Again, Fritz seemed to limit the damage as Adam Greenberg hit a pop up to shallow left field. However, Anderson Machado dropped the ball as two more runs scored. Fritz' next pitched was slammed to right for a two-run homer by Colin Roberson. 6-0. Game over.

The Barnstormers, shut out for the eighth time this season, managed only two hits in seven innings off starter Kyle Jackson (10-9) who walked two and struck out three. Corey Lee worked the final two innings and allowed one additional hit, a single by L.J. Biernbaum in the ninth.

Lancaster had two legitimate chances to score. Jed Morris picked up a one-out walk in the third inning, and Suarez followed with a double lined over Hoorelbeke into the right field corner. Jackson got Lloyd Turner to pop up to second base and retired Vic Gutierrez on a shallow fly to right ending the inning, pinning Morris at third.

In the sixth, Jackson walked Turner. Gutierrez stroked a ground ball to the left of second base which was fumbled by Bautista for an error. On the next pitch, Jackson got Biernbaum to ground into a 3-6-3 double play, cancelling Lancaster hopes.

The series continues Tuesday on Back to School Night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Area teachers will receive discount admission, and there will be a school supplies drive for needy children in the Lancaster City Schools. Zack Parker (3-4) will match up against Matt Pike (5-7) in the 7:05 game.

NOTES: Lancaster has had five or fewer hits in seven of the last 13 games...In addition, the club only had four hits in the August 19 suspended game...Lancaster was also shut out eight times in both 2005 and 2008...Fritz has allowed 15 unearned runs in his last three starts against Bridgeport.
