Brian Bannister threw a four-hit shutout, facing the minimum 27 and giving the Binghamton Mets a 1-0 win over the Norwich Navigators Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at Dodd Stadium.

In the process, Bannister (8-1) became the Eastern League's first 8-game winner, allowing no walks and striking out 10, tying a career high. It was also the righthander's first career shutout and the first complete-game shutout by a B-Met since August 2nd, 2003, when Bob Keppel no-hit Portland.

Binghamton (31-32) got the only run it needed in the third. Victor Hall led off the inning by doubling off Merkin Valdez (4-3) and was sacrificed to third by Bannister. Anderson Hernandez followed with a base hit up the middle, scoring Hall.

Norwich (30-37) had five baserunners against Bannister, but three were thrown out trying to steal second by catcher Joe Hietpas, another was picked off first by Bannister and a fifth was erased as part of a double play.

Saturday, Binghamton continues its three-game series at Norwich. Ken Chenard (5-6, 4.83) will start for Binghamton against Chris Begg (4-4, 3.12) of Norwich. The first pitch is slated for 6:35 from Dodd Stadium with the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF starting at 6:20.
