PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week Awards for the week ending August 3rd:
Bowie Baysox outfielder Luis Montanez has been named the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending August 3rd. The 26-year old had an outstanding week for the Baysox, batting .581 (18-for-31) with two doubles, two triples, three home runs, 15 RBI, 13 runs scored and a 1.065 slugging percentage while leading the team to a 6-1 record. Montanez, who is a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, had multiple hits in all but two of the games he played in during the week, including going 5-for-6 while hitting for the cycle and driving in eight runs in a 19-3 win at Altoona on Friday night. The 6'2", 200 lb. slugger leads the league in batting average (.334), home runs (26) and RBI (97) and has a chance to become just the fifth player in Eastern League history to win the Triple Crown. Luis, who also won the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week Award for the week ending May 26th, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a free agent on November 14, 2006.

George Kontos, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, is the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 3rd. Kontos, who is a native of Lincolnwood, Illinois, made one appearance for the Thunder last week and had a 0.00 ERA. The 23-year old faced the Altoona Curve on Thursday afternoon at Waterfront Park in his lone start of the week and struck out 13 batters over eight shutout innings of work while giving up only one hit and one walk to earn a no-decision in a 1-0, 10 inning win for the Thunder. The 6'3", 215 lb. hurler is currently ranked second in the league in strikeouts (123). George, who posted a record of 11-9 with 183 strikeouts and a 3.39 in 172.1 innings pitched between Staten Island and Tampa during first two seasons in professional baseball, was selected by the New York Yankees in the 5th round of the 2006 draft out after going 11-19 with 184 strikeouts and a 5.49 ERA in 219.2 innings during three seasons at Northwestern University.
