Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - Bakersfield (62-54, 25-21) used a combination of five pitchers to hurl a one-hit shutout of Visalia (68-48, 22-24), recording 18 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory to even the series at a win apiece on Wednesday night at Rawhide Ballpark.
Bakersfield scored an unearned run against Rawhide starter LHP Alex Young (2-4, 3.31) in the third inning when DH Justin Seager doubled to begin the inning. 2B Gianfranco Wawoe laid down a sacrifice bunt that rolled up the third base line. 3B Joe Munoz came charging in, barehanded the ball and threw it wide of first base. On the throwing error, Seager came around to score the only run of the ballgame and give Bakersfield a 1-0 lead.
For Young in the outing, he pitched six innings and allowed four hits and three walks while striking out three and just the one unearned run but took the loss in the 1-0 shutout. The six innings marks the third straight appearance without allowing an earned run for Young, who has logged 21.0 innings and allowed nine hits and two unearned runs in his last three starts.
Bakersfield used a pitching staff by committee in the game with LHP Tyler Pike retiring all six men he faced with two strikeouts in his two innings on the mound. RHP Art Warren fired two scoreless frames recording four strikeouts. LHP Joe Pistorese, in two innings, struck out the side twice. RHP Daren Gillies logged four strikeouts in his two innings of work and Thyago Vieira (SV: 4) picked up two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth for the save. Bakersfield, in total, struck out 18 Rawhide in the 1-0 victory.
The only Rawhide hit came in the bottom of the sixth inning off the bat of LF Victor Reyes against Pistorese. A one-out infield single that Reyes slapped back up the middle and the second baseman Wawoe made a diving stop of but never got a throw off.
RHP Nick Baker, LHP Andrew Chafin and LHP Gabriel Moya all logged scoreless innings but the Bakersfield pitching staff was dominant, evening the series at a win apiece.
Tomorrow night is another 7:00 p.m. first pitch from Recreation Ballpark and on the mound for Visalia in the rubber match will be RHP Joel Payamps (4-3, 4.75) for Visalia. Bakersfield will send RHP Osmer Morales (3-3, 4.09) to the mound in the finale. Tomorrow night is another Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark presented by Budweiser. There will be live music by Eddie Guzman from 6:00 - 6:45 p.m at the home plate concession area where you can buy $1 select beers from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
