San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Dylan Davis hit a tiebreaking two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth and the Giants held off a late High Desert rally to earn a 4-3 victory over the Mavericks on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. With the win, San Jose (60-57) takes two out of three games from the league's best team.
Dan Slania (2-0) notched the win on the mound after an effective six-inning start. The right-hander surrendered just two unearned runs and five hits during his outing. Slania walked one and struck out two. Reyes Moronta allowed a single run in the top of the ninth, but stranded the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base to pick-up his 10th save of the year.
Offensively, Davis (1-for-2, HR, 2 RBI) and Miguel Gomez (1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) combined to drive in all four of the Giants' runs.
High Desert took an early 1-0 lead in the contest scoring once in the top of the second against Slania. With two outs, Jairo Beras ripped a double down the left field line. Kevin Torres then reached on an infield single and when shortstop Rando Moreno threw wildly to first on the play, Beras raced home with the first run of the afternoon.
San Jose though answered with a two-run bottom of the second to move in front. Mitch Delfino walked with one out before Aramis Garcia slapped a single into left. Gomez was up next and he smoked a line drive into the right field corner for a double as both Delfino and Garcia scored giving the Giants a 2-1 lead.
The Mavericks then took advantage of another San Jose error to tie the game in the top of the third. With one out, Dylan Moore singled. After Luke Tendler flied out, Jose Trevino hit a high fly ball to medium-deep left field that was dropped by Daniel Carbonell for an error. The miscue allowed Moore to score tying the game 2-2.
ln the top of the fourth, Slania pitched around a two-out error before working through a two-out double in the fifth keeping the game deadlocked. The Giants then took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Ronnie Jebavy was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Moreno flied out. Davis was up next and he crushed a 1-0 pitch from High Desert starter David Ledbetter over the fence in left center for a two-run home run. The homer, Davis' 10th in the California League this season, gave San Jose a 4-2 lead.
Slania finished his outing with a 1-2-3 top of the sixth before Pat Young (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) worked around a leadoff walk in the seventh to maintain the two-run cushion. D.J. Snelten (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) pitched the top of the eighth for the Giants and allowed a two-out double to Jose Cardona. Snelten though struck out the next batter, Josh Morgan, to end the inning.
With the score still 4-2, Moronta took over on the mound in the top of the ninth. Beras began the inning with a triple off the fence in deep left center and immediately scored when the next batter, Kevin Torres, hit a sacrifice fly to center. The run trimmed the San Jose lead to 4-3. Moronta followed with a strikeout of Elio Castillo to bring the Giants to within one out of victory, but Michael De Leon then doubled into the right center field gap putting the potential tying run into scoring position. Moore followed with a slow grounder to shortstop that was fielded by Moreno, however a wide throw to first pulled Jonah Arenado off the bag. Moreno was charged with San Jose's fourth error of the game as Moore was safe at first and De Leon moved to third. However, Moronta settled down and induced Tendler on the first pitch of his at-bat to fly out to left ending the game.
Ledbetter (6-8) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs (all earned) on six hits over six-plus innings of work. He walked three and struck out four.
