Portland Sea Dogs News Release
After a four-day break, the Sea Dogs used four RBI from Kole Cottam to take down the Fisher Cats 8-5 on Friday night. New Hampshire started the scoring in the bottom of the first. With one out, Rafael Lantigua reached on a line drive single. Addison Barger stepped up to the plate and blasted a two-run homer, giving the Fisher Cats a 2-0 lead. The Sea Dogs responded in the top of the second. Stephen Scott and Alex Binelas both singled, putting two runners on. Kole Cottam brought home Scott on a ground-ball base hit to center, making it a 2-1 game. Tyreque Reed loaded the bases with a single and Wil Dalton hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in Binelas to tie the game 2-2. New Hampshire scored two more on a throwing error and an RBI base hit from John Aiello, making it a 4-2 advantage for the Fisher Cats. Portland was able to add a run in the top of the fifth inning. David Hamilton led off with a solo shot to right field, bringing the score to 4-3. The Sea Dogs kept rolling and tied the game in the top of the sixth. Cottam led off with a triple to left. Reed singled to left, driving in Cottam, tying the game 4-4. The offense exploded in the top of the eighth, plating four runs for the Sea Dogs. Ceddanne Rafaela hit a one-out double and Christian Koss brought him in with an infield single and an error, giving Portland their first lead, 5-4. Hudson Potts and Binelas both walked, loading the bases. Cottam ripped his second triple of the night, clearing the bases, and vaulted the Sea Dogs to an 8-4 lead. The Fisher Cats plated one run in the bottom of the eight, but Ryan Fernandez tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth to secure an 8-5 victory.
HAMILTON HITTING FEST - With a 2-for-6 performance in the series-opening win against the Fisher Cats, David Hamilton has now reached base safely in 13 consecutive games. Overall during this streak, he is 14-for-52 (.269), with two doubles and three homers while driving in five RBI. Friday also marked the third time Hamilton has recorded a multi-hit game during the streak.
MORE OFTEN THAN NOT - The league leader in steals resides on the Sea Dogs roster this season. David Hamilton has swiped 40 bags this season, and he kicked into another gear for the second half. During the 17 games played in the second half so far, Hamilton has stolen at least one base nine times. He has only gone without a steal in eight of those games. If the one-steal games weren't enough, four games in the second half have included multiple steals for Hamilton, stealing two twice and three two times.
COTTAM FINDS EXTRA BASES - Kole Cottam added to an impressive stat line in June with a 2-for-5 game on Friday that included two triples. During his 12 games played in July, he is hitting .267 (12-for- 45). Out of his 12 hits this month, six have gone for extra bases. He has collected three doubles, two triples, and one homer over that time while knocking in 11 runs for the Sea Dogs.
THIS DAY IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 23, 2017 - Portland sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs as they defeated Hartford 13-2 at Hadlock Field...The Sea Dogs scored all eight runs with two outs - Jeremy Barfield and Cole Sturgeon each homered. Mike Olt finished 3-for-4 with a homer and a triple.
PITCHING MATCHUP - The right-hander Yusniel Padron-Artiles gets the call for the second game this weekend against the Fisher Cats. He made his first Double-A appearance before the break, on July 17 against the Somerset Patriots. In that game he worked through 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits in a no-decision. His promotion to the Sea Dogs comes after a fantastic month of June with the High-A Greenville Drive, where he made four starts over five outings, posting a 2.84 ERA over 19.0 innings. He struck out 21 batters and walked just 11 in that month and was called up to Double-A shortly after.
