Baby Cakes Rise in 3-2 Walkoff Win over Express
April 30, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
METAIRIE, Louisiana - The New Orleans Baby Cakes (10-14) scored three runs in the final three innings of play to record a 3-2 walkoff victory over the Round Rock Express (9-16) after 10 innings in Monday night's series opener at the Shrine on Airline.
The late New Orleans comeback spoiled one of the best starts of RHP Tyler Wagner's Round Rock career. The righty tossed 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out five in the no-decision. Equally as impressive, Baby Cakes starter RHP Ben Meyer carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Meyer finished having allowed just two runs on three hits and a walk in 7.0 strong innings.
Baby Cakes RHP Jumbo Diaz (1-2, 2.70) picked up his first win of the year after a shutout 10th inning of relief.
E-Train RHP Tayler Scott (2-1, 2.89) suffered the loss after giving up the game-winning run on a hit and two walks in 1.1 total innings out of the Round Rock bullpen.
The Express jumped on the board first as LF Willie Calhoun worked a leadoff walk in the second inning. After moving to second on a Meyer wild pitch, Calhoun was able to score thanks to back-to-back groundouts by 1B Tommy Joseph and DH Destin Hood.
Clinging to a narrow 1-0 lead, Wagner proceeded to retire 12 of 13 hitters faced, including a span of eight in a row, over the next four innings. Meyer's no-hitter came to an abrupt end in the sixth inning as E-Train C Tony Sanchez blasted a solo home run over the fence in left field to double the Round Rock lead to 2-0.
However, in the eighth, Express RHP Nick Gardewine walked LF Austin Dean before surrendering a game-tying, two-run homer to rehabbing Miami Marlins SS J.T. Riddle. With Minor League Baseball's new extra-innings rules in place, the Baby Cakes opened the 10th inning with Dean on second base. A Cito Culver sacrifice bunt moved Dean to third prior to a walkoff RBI single by Eric Campbell, who had just replaced Riddle to begin the 10th.
The Express look to bounce back in game two on Tuesday night. E-Train RHP Yovani Gallardo (0-0, 6.00) is slated to start against a Baby Cakes pitcher yet to be announced. First pitch at the Shrine on Airline is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
