Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Adbert Alzolay was brilliant through 7.0 as the Iowa Cubs (5-17) snapped an eight-game losing streak, besting the Omaha Storm Chasers (8-16) 10-3, Monday at Principal Park. Iowa's offense supported the effort with five home runs, three off the bat of Mike Freeman.
In his second start at home, Alzolay was cruising as he took a no-hitter through 5.1 innings. Adalberto Mondesi foiled the effort with an infield single to short. Alzolay immediately induced a double play and clapped back by striking out the side in order in the seventh to cap a dazzling effort. Alzolay ended his night with one hit allowed, two walks and six strikeouts. He captured the win to improve to 2-1.
Iowa seized the first lead in the third on a Freeman home run and was able to hold on. Mark Zagunis helped the effort with another solo shot in the fourth, followed by an RBI single from Chesny Young in the inning. Freeman kept the power and blasted his second homer of the game in the seventh to give the I-Cubs a 4-0 edge.
A bases-loaded error by Bijan Rademacher spoiled the shutout as two unearned runs scored for Omaha in the eighth. The Storm Chasers made it a one-run game in the inning, scoring a third run on a wild pitch from Dillon Maples.
The I-Cubs immediately distanced themselves with a six-run eighth. Taylor Davis tagged a ball that sailed over the left-field scoreboard for his first home run of the season before Freeman got his third long ball of the game with a shot to center. It was the first career multi-homer game for Freeman. His five RBI also marked a career high.
Iowa's 10 runs were its most of the season and the five home runs were the most for the team since June 14, 2016.
Iowa and Omaha play game two of the four-game set tomorrow at 6:38 p.m. Blank Park Zoo will be at Principal Park for Kids Day. Kids get in free and adult general admission tickets are just $5. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
