Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Michel Abreu hit a two-run homer and scored twice and Orlando Roman tossed four no-hit innings of relief, helping the Binghamton Mets to a 7-3 victory over the Trenton Thunder in the series opener at Waterfront Park Friday. The win is Binghamton's season-high seventh straight, as they improve to 3-0 on their six-game road trip.

The B-Mets (41-44) never trailed, taking the lead in the first. After retiring the first two hitters, Francisco Butto gave up a base hit to Jorge Padilla before Michel Abreu reached him for a two-run homer to right, putting Binghamton on top 2-0.

After Trenton (47-40) tied the score on a two-run homer by Randy Ruiz in the third, Binghamton re-took the lead with a three-run fourth. Abreu opened the frame with a single before Butto (1-2) walked Jay Caligiuri and Carlos Gomez bunted both runners into scoring position. Once Andy Wilson struck out, Corey Ragsdale reached with a bunt single that scored Abreu before Mike DiFelice doubled to right, chasing in Caligiuri and Ragsdale for a 5-2 B-Mets advantage.

B-Mets spot starter Robert Paulk lasted into the fifth inning, departing after Omir Santos singled, Brett Gardner walked and Gabe Lopez doubled to right, scoring Santos to cut the B-Mets' lead to two. However, Roman (4-2) struck out Ruiz and got Sardinha to fly out to right. Gardner tried to score from third on the flyout, but Ambiorex Concepcion threw him out at the plate, ending the threat and the inning.

Binghamton closed the scoring in the seventh, when DiFelice singled and scored on Concepcion's double off the left-centerfield fence before Padilla drove in Concepcion with a two-base hit of his own.

All seven of Binghamton's runs scored with two out. Saturday, the B-Mets play the second game of their three-game series at Trenton. Miguel Perez (2-4, 5.05) will start for Binghamton against lefthander Charlie Manning (6-1, 3.17) of Trenton. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 at Waterfront Park with radio broadcast starting at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
