Connecticut Defenders News Release

The offense was not as plentiful as they would like, but two runs was just enough for Jesse Floyd, who pitched seven one-run innings in a 2-1 Defenders victory over the New Britain Rock Cats on Friday night.

Jesse Floyd worked in and out of jams early, and couldn't quite escape damage in the 2nd inning due to a Matt Tolbert lead off triple. Perhaps the biggest loss of the night came on the play that knocked him in to score. The run wasn't as hurtful as the injury that resulted from it. Catcher Brian Munhall blocked the plate on an infield ground ball. Tolbert was off on contact, and initiated a clean hard collision at the plate. Munhall finished the inning, but was pinch hit for in the bottom of the 2nd.

Kevin Slowey mowed the Defenders hitters down for four innings, but in the bottom of the 5th, back to back doubles by Jon Armitage, and Andy Busch, Munhall's replacement, led to the tying run. The Defenders scored the go-ahead run in the 7th inning when they began the inning with back to back singles by Brian Horwitz and Nate Schierholtz to put runners on the corners. Horwitz had three hits to follow up his walk off home run on the previous night. The next batter, Armitage scored Horwitz on a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Defenders.

Scott Munter pitched an inning and two thirds before leaving with two on and two out in the 9th. Billy Sadler walked JR Taylor to load the bases before striking out Denard Span to end the game. For Connecticut it was their fifth win in six games. On Saturday they will play two with the Rock Cats with game one beginning at 6:05. Lefty Glen Perkins (2-9) will pitch game one for New Britain against Defenders right hander James Garcia (1-1). In game two, the Rock Cats will use another southpaw, Jay Sawatski (1-0) against the Defenders left hander, Jason Waddell (1-1), making a spot start.
