Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - A two-hour, 28-minute delay prior to the first pitch proved worth the wait for Binghamton, which set season highs in runs and hits in an 8-1 win over New Hampshire at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium Saturday afternoon. The contest was delayed due to heavy rain associated with thunderstorms in the Manchester area before the B-Mets began their 15-hit parade.
Binghamton (10-15) climbed on top in the fourth inning after Brad Holt and Fisher Cats hurler Zach Stewart traded zeroes through the first three frames. Brahiam Maldonado led off the frame and smacked a towering blast to left off a 2-1 offering from Stewart for his seventh homer of the season, which made it 1-0.
The B-Mets laid it on thick in the fifth. Jordany Valdespin led off with a triple. After Mike Fisher grounded out to first, Josh Satin grounded a single up the middle past the drawn-in infield to up the lead to 2-0. Maldonado traded places with Satin at first on a fielder's choice to third for the second out. Stewart, however, could not get out of the inning quick enough. The hurler walked Eric Campbell to extend the frame and Allan Dykstra made him pay with a bloop RBI single to center. Carlos Guzman capped the inning's scoring with a ringing double off the wall in right, which plated two runs to advance the lead to 5-0.
Holt only lasted four innings due to five walks issued, forcing the bullpen to absorb the final five innings. With a doubleheader in sight on Sunday, the prospect of sparing the bullpen seemed bleak. However, Michael Powers came on and impressed with 4 2/3 innings of one-run work to pick up his first Double-A win.
Stewart left after a season-low five innings. He permitted a season-worst five earned runs on 10 hits to take his second loss of the season.
New Hampshire's (16-10) lone run off Powers came when Anthony Gose led off the fifth with a triple and later scored on Moises Sierra's groundout to short.
Binghamton played add-on in the seventh inning courtesy of the long ball. Maldonado clobbered his second homer of the game leading off the inning against former B-Mets right-hander Clint Everts. After Everts walked Campbell, Dykstra sat on a first-pitch fastball and sent it out of the yard to right for his second homer of the season, which increased the lead to 8-1.
The B-Mets outhit the Fisher Cats 15-6 en route to the convincing victory. Guzman had the high hit total of the game with a 3-for-5 showing and Dykstra paced the run-scoring with three RBI.
Binghamton and New Hampshire will settle the series with a doubleheader beginning at 1:35 PM Sunday afternoon. RHP Dylan Owen (0-1, 18.00) gets the call in the first game opposite RHP Rey Gonzalez (3-1, 1.28) of New Hampshire. Game Two pits RHP Edgar Ramirez (0-2, 7.45) against RHP Yohan Pino (0-1, 7.71). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 1:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
