Altoona Curve News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - Eric Surkamp struck out ten batters and allowed only two hits in the start for the Richmond Flying Squirrels as they shut out the Altoona Curve on Saturday night at the Diamond in Richmond by the score of 5-0.
Surkamp (2-2) was dazzling in his second start against the Curve this season. He had four separate innings where he struck two batters out and left the game tying his season-high of ten. He left the game after allowing two hits and no runs in 6.1 innings of work. Edwin Quirate came on in relief and worked Surkamp out of a jam with a double play thrown to his first batter. Quiarte worked through the eighth inning and Wilmin Rodriguez worked a clean ninth in the shutout effort.
For the second straight game, the Flying Squirrels get on the board first as, in the third inning, they got three straight hits to lead off the inning and loaded the bases up on Curve starter Aaron Thompson. The fourth batter of the inning reached on an error in the infield, and then with two down, Mike McBryde doubled to left, clearing the bases and putting Richmond ahead 4-0. McBryde was thrown out on the play trying for third and all the runs brought in on his hit were unearned.
Thompson (2-3) ended up going two outs into the fifth inning as he allowed four runs, one earned, on eight hits with seven strikeouts and a walk. Thompson left the game with a runner on third and Anthony Claggett was brought in from the pen and got the next hitter to ground out.
Off Claggett, who pitched a clean sixth inning, the Flying Squirrels extended their lead in the seventh as Charlie Culberson was hit by a pitch and he was doubled in by the next batter to push the lead to 5-0. Chris Leroux pitched a clean eighth in his second appearance of the season for the Curve.
With the loss, the Curve are back at an even record on the season and suffered their second shutout loss of the year. With his hit in the fourth, Jeremy Farrell extended his hitting streak to ten games.
The Curve (13-14) will conclude their road series with Richmond (14-15) as RHP Jared Hughes (0-1, 4.88) will make the start for Altoona and he will be opposed by RHP Justin Fitzgerald (2-1, 2.66). Game time is set for 2:05 p.m. at The Diamond in Richmond with pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 1:35 p.m.
