Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Mike Jacobs homered twice, as he and Wayne Lydon each had four-hit games, but it wasn't enough for the Binghamton Mets, who fell to Akron 12-9 at NYSEG Stadium Thursday. Akron took two out of three in the series. Binghamton has lost two straight after winning five in a row.
Akron (30-22) got to B-Mets starter Ken Chenard in the first. The righthander allowed an Eider Torres walk and singles to Shaun Larkin and Warren Morris, loading the bases. Next up was Jason Cooper, who hit a grand slam to left for a 4-0 Akron lead.
The B-Mets (26-24) would get a run back in the bottom of the inning. After Lydon led off with a bunt single and Aarom Baldiris was hit by a Fausto Caromona pitch, Jacobs grounded one to the right side that was thrown away to first by second baseman Eider Torres for an error. Lydon scored to make it 4-1.
After Akron got a Larkin RBI single in the second and a Pat Osborn homer off Chenard (4-5) in the third to go up 6-1, Binghamton mounted a comeback. After Jacobs led off the third with his eighth home run of the year, Joe Hietpas followed suit in the fourth, leading off with a longball to left, cutting Akron's lead to 6-3. Lydon then reached on a bunt single off Carmona (4-4) and, after the next two were retired, Prentice Redman drove him in with a double. Jacobs followed with a single to left, scoring Redman and pulling the B-Mets within 6-5.
After Akron scored six times over the four innings to go up 12-5, Lydon led off the eighth with a base hit to right off Akron reliever Kyle Evans and then took second. Two batters later, Jeff Duncan walked and Redman singled to load the bases, bringing up Jacobs, who hit a towering grand slam to right-center to bring Binghamton within three. Although the B-Mets got a runner on in the ninth, Akron's Todd Pennington was able to keep them off the board, notching his eighth save in the process.
Next, the Binghamton Mets head to Trenton, NJ for a three-game series against the Thunder. Friday, Orlando Roman (2-1, 3.57) will start for Binghamton against Matt DeSalvo (4-1, 3.35) of Trenton. The first pitch from Waterfront Park is scheduled for 7:05, with the radio broadcast starting at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
