Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Streak Stopped
Brian Bannister gave up a run in six innings, but it wasn't enough as the Akron Aeros scored three times in the seventh en route to beating the Binghamton Mets 5-1 at NYSEG Stadium yesterday morning. Anderson Hernandez went 2 for 5 with a run scored and Prentice Redman picked up an RBI on a sac fly for the B-Mets, who saw their season-high five-game win streak come to an end. The three-game series is now even at a game apiece.
Standings Update
Last night, New Hampshire beat Portland 4-1, putting the Fisher Cats back in first place, a game ahead of the Sea Dogs. The B-Mets are still in third place, two games behind New Hampshire and one behind Portland.
All Quiet On The Offensive Front
Yesterday's game marked just the seventh time this season the B-Mets have been held to one run. Binghamton has lost all of those contests and have won just one game in which they've scored two runs or fewer â a 2-0 shutout at New Hampshire in the second game of a doubleheader on April 24th. The B-Mets have been shut out only once â a 9-0 blanking at Akron the fourth game of the season on April 10th.
Winning At Home
After sweeping Trenton over the holiday weekend and taking two of three from Altoona May 20th-22nd, the B-Mets are looking to win their third straight series at home. After starting off 7-8 at NYSEG Stadium, Binghamton has won seven of its last nine games at home.
Good Morning!
The B-Mets are playing the last of three and the second straight 10:30 a.m. game at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton has lost each of the first two morning games, also falling 5-3 to Bowie on May 11th. The B-Mets are 2-6 in NYSEG Stadium day games and have lost seven of their last 10 daytime contests.
On The Mound
RHP Ken Chenard (4-4, 3.97)
Last Time Out: Sat. vs. TRE (W): 5 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 7 K (W 4-2)...Ken allowed a Bronson Sardinha solo shot in the first and an RBI double by Eric Crozier in the fourth, but was still able to pick up his first win at NYSEG Stadium this year. Ken had baserunners in every inning except the second. All 15 outs recorded by Ken were either strikeouts, groundouts or infield pop-ups.
This Season: After struggling to go deep into games early in the season, Ken has lasted at least five innings in each of his last five starts and seven of his last eight. The righthander has given up three runs or fewer in nine of his 10 starts. Ken is 1-3 with a 6.27 ERA in four NYSEG Stadium starts this year compared to 3-1, 2.48 marks in six road starts.
Against Akron: Ken's first start of the year came in Binghamton's second game of the season on April 8th at Canal Park. He got a no-decision after going a season-low three innings, yielding three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven in a 6-5 Akron win. That day, opposing Fausto Carmona, Ken got two quick outs in the first, but then walked two and gave up a three-run homer to Jason Cooper.
Background: The Victorville, CA native is in his seventh pro season, all of them spent in the Mets organization, after being selected by New York in the 46th round of the 1998 draft out of Fullerton (CA) Junior College. Last season, he tied for the B-Mets team lead in wins, going 9-6 with a 4.45 ERA in 27 games, 17 of them starts. Before coming to Binghamton, Ken spent most of the previous three seasons with High-A St. Lucie, compiling a 9-10 record working primarily as a starter.
