The Latest
The Portland Sea Dogs scored a run in the first and never looked back, shutting out the Binghamton Mets 4-0 at NYSEG Stadium yesterday...B-Mets starter Bryan Edwards lasted only four innings, allowing all four Portland runs, two of which were earned...reliever Robert Paulk then came in and blanked Portland on three hits over the final five innings...Zac Clements had two of Binghamton's four hits. Jorge Padilla doubled and Andy Wilson singled for Binghamton's other safeties...Portland completed a four-game series sweep of the B-Mets, who began their seven-game homestand with a three-game sweep of Altoona.

Paulk's whitewash yesterday gave the B-Mets bullpen their only scoreless appearance in the series with Portland, as they allowed 10 runs - nine earned - in 8 2/3 innings (9.35 ERA) in the first three games of the series...prior to that series, the relief corps had yielded just four earned runs in their nine games...15 of Binghamton's last 20 games have been decided by two runs or fewer, with the B-Mets winning seven of those close contests, six of them at home...The B-Mets have lost 10 of their last 11 games on the road.
About Trenton
The Thunder took three of five in their last series at New Britain, finishing an eight-game road trip that started in Bowie with a 5-3 mark...Trenton dropped 13 of their first 14 games of the season, including their first 10 in a row. Since their 1-13 start, the Thunder have gone 21-11...Trenton's pitchers have posted the Eastern League's second-best ERA (3.02) and have two hurlers in the league's top 10, including today's starter Steven White, who's ninth (2.28).

Last year's Binghamton-Trenton matchups favored the home team, which won 11 of the 13 games played between the two clubs last year, as each team won just once in the other's ballpark...the difference in Binghamton's series with Portland was the late innings, as the Sea Dogs outscored them 13-2 from the seventh inning on...Binghamton's now 0-4 in games with a.m. starts with seven morning games remaining on the schedule....Bob Keppel, the last B-Met to throw a no-hitter (2003), made his Major League debut yesterday with Kansas City, allowing a run in 3 1/3 innings vs. Detroit. The righthander becomes the third B-Mets hurler, and second in two days, to make his Major League debut this season, joining Alay Soler, who started for the Mets vs. Philadelphia Wednesday, and Florida Marlins reliever Yusmeiro Petit, who's allowed just one run in four appearances since being called up from AAA Albuquerque on 5/13.

From Wichita, KS...signed a four-year Major League contract with the Mets in January, 2006 that included a club-record $3.55 million signing bonus...Mets' first round pick in the 2005 draft and ninth selection overall...33-7 with a school-record 2.18 ERA in three seasons at Wichita State (KS) University, striking out 366 and walking only 69 in 359 2/3 innings...averaged a school-record 1.7 BB/9 innings...led WSU in wins, innings and strikeouts in each of his three seasons...four of seven WSU losses were in one-run games, including two 1-0 contests...Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year for an unprecedented second straight year in 2005, going 12-3 with a 1.93 ERA in 19 starts, striking out 143 and walking 30 in 139 2/3 innings ...drafted in the 15th round by Tampa Bay in 2002 out of Wichita Heights (KS) High School, but did not sign...all-state at Wichita Heights in 2001 and 2002, being named Kansas' Gatorade Player of the Year in 2001.
