Axmen Suffer Heartbreaking Extra-Inning Loss
June 18, 2021 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Kingsport Axmen News Release
KINGSPORT, TN - For the first time, the Kingsport Axmen and the Pulaski River Turtles experienced the Appalachian League's experimental extra-innings rule.
With the Axmen and River Turtles tied after nine frames, the 10th inning featured both teams receiving a crack with runners placed on first and second with no outs.
Kingsport left the tying-run 90 feet away, and ultimately fell short, 2-1, to Pulaski at Hunter Wright Stadium on Friday night.
The River Turtles (6-7) scratched across a run with their opportunity in the top of the 10th. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out, the visitors scored on a passed ball to grab their first lead since the third inning.
In the bottom half, the Axmen (4-9) were unable to rally and extend the game.
Kingsport forced extras behind strong outings from its pitching staff. Four Axmen hurlers combined to throw 10 innings without yielding an earned run.
Right-hander Malik Binns (Benedictine Mesa) struck out six and scattered two hits over three innings.
Adam Parra (Gateway) provided length out of the Axmen bullpen. Parra retired nine of the 10 hitters he faced, piggybacking off of Binns' fourth start. The Chandler, Arizona native recorded five strikeouts and lowered his earned-run average to 1.13.
Southpaw Kyle Scrape (Hillsborough) and closer Patrick Strawbridge (Dayton) tossed two innings apiece, rounding out Kingsport's strikeout total at 16.
After 22 combined runs on as many hits Thursday evening, offense was limited for both teams one night later.
Pulaski pushed a run home in the first after a single and a defensive miscue, but the Axmen quickly responded.
JonJon Berring (Santa Clara) lined a base hit into right, plating Cal Hejza (Illinois) from second to level things up.
Despite the early timely hitting, Kingsport couldn't deliver a big knock when it mattered most.
Next, the Axmen host the Johnson City Doughboys for a two-game series. The first leg is set for Saturday, featuring a post-game fireworks show. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
All Kingsport Axmen games are broadcast here with a video stream available online for home games.
