Doughboys Drop Tight Battle against Bristol

June 18, 2021 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Johnson City Doughboys News Release

Despite a big night at the plate for Joe Vetrano, the Johnson City Doughboys suffered a 5-4 loss at the hands of the Bristol State Liners on Thursday night in Bristol.

Vetrano went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, but it wasn't enough for the Doughboys, who have now lost four of their last five.

Johnson City (5-7) trailed by a run in the ninth and managed to get a runner aboard with two outs, but RHP Paul Gervase (SV, 1) picked off Damani Thomas to end the game.

Jaxson Crull picked up his 16th RBI of the season on a groundout that gave Johnson City a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Bristol (6-5) got a two-run home run from Tate Kight to leap in front, but Cherokee Nichols blasted his second home run of the season in the fourth inning, a solo shot, to tie the game back up at 2-2.

Later, RHP Joe Moran (L, 0-1) struck out the side in the fifth inning but Bristol got to him for three runs in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. The Doughboys cashed in a leadoff double in the seventh from Chyran Cruse and also brought home Edwin De La Cruz on a ground out to pull within a run at 5-4, but Gervase threw the final two scoreless innings to give the State Liners the home win.

LHP Will Westbrock finished with his best start of the year for the Doughboys, throwing four scoreless innings with no earned runs and five strikeouts.

Johnson City will return to Bristol on Friday night to try to split the series. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
