Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY - The Sioux City Explorers dropped game two of their three game series with the Coastal Bend Aviators, 6-3, Wednesday night. The loss drops the X's record to 13-12 and improves the South Division leading Aviators record to 17-8.
The Aviators jumped out to a quick start, scoring twice in the second. Steve Morales reached on an infield single and scored on a Wilson Burrell infield single. Andy Wilson drew a four-pitch walk and came home when Bryon Smith walked. Sioux City failed to capitalize on loading the bases in the first two innings.
The Explorers rallied and took the lead in the home half of the fifth. Ryan Ruiz drew a walk, Robert Mendoza reached on a bunt and Dan Meier walked. All came home when Ryan Gripp doubled deep off the center field wall.
The Aviators proved to be too much for the X's, regaining the lead in the seventh. Brian Fryer singled to center, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored when Nick Connor hit a grounder to shortstop. Wilson Burell drew a walk and came home to give Coastal Bend the lead for good when Matt Creighton singled to center.
In the seventh, Sioux City's Dan Meier doubled deep off the wall down the right field line. Jorge Moreno singled to left, and both Meier and Moreno advanced on an error by the Coastal Bend leftfielder. However, the X's once again could not take advantage and left both men on base.
The Aviators added two insurance runs in the eighth, when Rodney Medina reached on an infield single. Medina scored on a Andy Wilson grounder. Steve Morales reached base on a single and scored when Nick Connor grounded out to second.
Coastal Bend's Bryan Heaston and James Lira came on to pitch the eighth and ninth innings respectively and shut down the X's, striking out three of the six batters faced.
Sioux City starter Karsten Gaarder pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits, striking out five and walking four. Pedro Flores started for Coastal Bend, and went five innings, giving up three runs on three hits, striking out two and walking eight.
Jorge Moreno went 2-5 at the plate for the X's and Dan Meier was 1-4, with three RBIs.
Sioux City and Coastal Bend will finish the series Thursday night at Lewis and Clark Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Derrick Van Dusen (2-2) will take the mound for the Aviators, while Tom Lipari (3-1) will start for the Explorers.
