
"Smoke" Gainer to take batting practice with Pelicans

The Pensacola Pelicans are proud to announce that Pensacola's own and former World Boxing Association Feather Weight Champion Derrick "Smoke" Gainer will take batting practice with the team this Thursday beginning at 3:00 p.m. Gainer will also be a part of the first pitch ceremony tomorrow night when the Pelicans take on the Fort Worth Cats at 6:35 p.m. at Pelican Park.
"It's great to have a local celebrity like "Smoke" Gainer taking batting practice with the team and have him out at Pelican Park. The players and the entire organization are looking forward to have "Smoke" in the batting cage," said Pelicans COO/General Manager George Stavrenos.
Gainer currently has a professional record of 39 wins, 7 losses and 1 no decision with 24 technical knock outs. He won the WBA Featherweight championship vs. Freddie Norwood on September 4, 2000 in New Orleans.
The Pelicans will continue their six game home stand tonight vs. the Fort Worth Cats at 6:35 p.m. at Pelican Park. Tonight is "Family Night." Fans can purchase 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 pepsi, 4 bingo cards and 4 fan cards for $24.
Tomorrow night is "Thirsty Thursday" sponsored by the Navy League/L-3 Communications and TK 101 when the Pelicans play Fort Worth at 6:35 p.m. All domestic draft beer is $1.
The Pelicans will play Shreveport on Friday night at Pelican Park. The Pelicans will complete their game against Shreveport which was suspended on May 28th because of a power failure beginning at 5:35 p.m. and the regular game will begin about 20 minutes following the completion of the first game. All fans attending will receive Pelican Pennants sponsored by Cox Communications and World Ford.
The Pelicans will play Shreveport on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. It is Boy Scout Night. The Pelicans will wrap up the home stand on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. at Pelican Park. It is Kids Club Sunday sponsored by Covenant Hospice. Kids club members can get in free to the game by wearing their Kids club t-shirts.
Fans can purchase individual Pelican's home game tickets in person at the Pelicans office located at 913 Gulf Breeze Parkway in Suite 8A or through the Pelicans website at www.pensacolapelicans.com. For group tickets, season tickets, birthday parties and corporate sponsorships, fans can call the Pelicans office at 934-8444.
