Avengers trim roster below regular-season limit
February 26, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- With their season opener rapidly approaching, the Los Angeles Avengers waived 10 players and placed six on the injured reserve list, trimming their active roster to 22 players, which is two below the Arena Football League's regular-season limit of 24, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.
The Avengers will kick off their eighth season in the 21-year-old AFL on Sunday, March 4, versus the San Jose SaberCats at STAPLES Center. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific) and the contest will be broadcast live on AM 570 KLAC and in Spanish on ESPN Deportes 1330 AM.
Among the 10 players waived was wide receiver/linebacker Antoine Burns, who set an Avengers single-season record for kickoff return yardage as a rookie in 2006. Playing in just 10 games last season, he returned 51 kickoffs for 984 yards and two touchdowns.
The other nine players waived by Los Angeles are: defensive lineman Terrance Carter, wide receiver/linebacker Ataveus Cash, wide receiver/linebacker Chris Cole, offensive lineman Paul Keizer, offensive lineman Matt Magerko, defensive back Tod McBride, defensive lineman Marcus Parker, defensive back Kevin Stanley and offensive lineman Albert Stinson.
The six Avengers who will spend at least the first four weeks of the 2007 season on the injured reserve list are: linebacker Jon Apgar, wide receiver/linebacker Nichiren Flowers, defensive lineman Josh Jeffries, defensive back Rushen Jones, wide receiver/linebacker Terrence Stubbs and quarterback Kevin Thompson
Eight of the 22 players on L.A.'s opening-day active roster are rookies. Four others are second-year players, including starting quarterback Sonny Cumbie, who earned AFL All-Rookie honors last season after passing for 3,241 yards and 59 touchdowns.
Avenger season tickets, which include nine games played at STAPLES Center, are on sale now at 888-AVENGERS or www.laavengers.com. Single-game tickets, which range in price from $10 to $69.50, are also on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com and the STAPLES Center box office.
