PORTLAND WINS BIG ON SATURDAY NIGHT The Sea Dogs took down the Flying Squirrels last night, 12-4 at Hadlock Field last night. Portland ignited the scoring in the bottom of the first courtesy of a bases-clearing double off the bat of Nathan Hickey (13) to put the Sea Dogs up 3-0. Victor Bericoto blasted a solo homer in the top of the second to put Richmond on the board. Chase Meidroth continued the scoring in the bottom of the second with a two-run single to extend the 5-1 lead. Blaze Jordan blasted his sixth homer of the season and first at Hadlock Field in the bottom of the second. The two-run shot to left field extended the Portland lead, 7-1. Jimmy Glowenke hit a solo homer in the top of the third but Richmond trailed by five. Meidroth recorded his second hit of the day with an RBI single to score McDonough in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Binelas hit a single to right field before advancing to third on an error by the catcher. The hit to right field scored two runs and extended the 10-2 lead. Tyler Dearden hit an RBI double (8) to left field to score Binelas before an RBI single from Corey Rosier extended the 12-2 Portland lead. Logan Wyatt blasted a two-run homer in the ninth but Portland held on to defeat Richmond, 12-4.
DOING DAMAGE AT THE PLATE Every Sea Dog collected a hit in the fifteen-hit affair while six recorded multi-hit games. Nick Yorke extended a sixteen-game on-base streak going two-for-five with a walk while Tyler McDonough extended a nine-game hitting streak going two-for-four with a walk. Blaze Jordan blasted his sixth homer of the season and first at Hadlock Field.
SEA DOGS STREAKS Nick Yorke is currently riding a sixteen-game on-base streak that was extended with two hits last night. The streak dates back to August 12th against Hartford. Yorke is currently batting .311 in the month of August while still leading the team in hits (107), runs (65), RBI (56), and ties for most triples (5). Tyler McDonough is also riding a nin-game hitting streak and is currently batting .333 in the month of August.
LUIS CONTINUES TO LEAD Luis Guerrero recorded his league-leading eighteenth of the season Tuesday night. Guerrero ranks second in all of minor league baseball in saves, just behind Zach Agnos of the Fresno Grizzlies (23). Guerrero pitched a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout in last night's series opener and has not allowed a run across 9.2 innings pitched in the month of August. He has allowed just eight earned runs across 46.1 innings this season.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY August 27, 2007 - Jon Lester made the start for the Sea Dogs, his first in Portland since 2005. Lester allowed one run over six innings in Portland's 5-2 win over the Trenton Thunder at Hadlock Field. Lester lowered his career ERA with Portland to 2.59, establishing a new franchise record.
PITCHING PREVIEW RHP Wikelman Gonzalez will start game one for the Sea Dogs today while RHP Sterling Sharp will pitch game two. In Gonzalez' last start, it was his shortest outing with the Sea Dogs. He tossed 2.2 innings August 19th at Binghamton and allowed four runs on two hits while walking four and striking out two. He gave up one home run. Gonzalez has faced the Flying Squirrels once and allowed two runs on two hits in 5.0 innings 7/29 at The Diamond. He issued four walks while striking out four. Sharp tossed 2.0 innings out of the bullpen on August 23rd vs Richmond and allowed one run on two hits while walking four and striking out four. He has made one start against the Flying Squirrels this season. on July 26th at The Diamond, he pitched 4.1 innings allowing six runs on five hits while walking four and striking out four.
