Sunday, August 12 - 2:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #78 - Home Game #42 (34-43), (17-24)

RHP #27 Matt Sommo (1-3, 3.54 ERA) vs. LHP #23 Ziggie VanderWall (6-4, 4.61 ERA)

Last time out.

Joliet prevailed 2-1 on Saturday night. Rockford brought the game's first run across in the fourth inning. Matt Greener singled with one away, and later in the inning, Jet Butler sent a liner to the right field wall, bringing Greener around. Butler was caught trying to stretch the double into a triple, but still secured a 1-0 lead. Joliet responded in the home half with a run of their own. David Christensen singled and proceeded to steal both second and third base while Kyle Maunus was at the plate. Maunus grounded out, but brought Christensen around in the process to tie the ballgame. The Slammers pulled ahead in the sixth and never gave the lead back. Abel Nieves doubled to lead the inning off, followed by a Maunus single to put runners on the corners. David Fox smacked an RBI single to give Joliet the lead. Tommy Mendoza went seven and two thirds innings for the victory. Amalio Diaz got the save.

For Starters.

Matt Sommo is coming off his best outing as a Slammer on August 7 as he went six shutout innings against the Road Warriors. Sommo walked three and struck out four while only allowing two hits in a 14-2 win for Joliet. Sommo began the 2012 season with the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the American Association. He most recently pitched for the defunct London Rippers. Sommo played his college ball at Division II University of New Haven. He led all team starters in 2011 with a 4-1 record and a miniscule 1.29 ERA. Sommo struck out 38 batters in 49 innings while walking just 12. Over his collegiate career he carried a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3-to-1.

Going for another series win.

Joliet is going for their third consecutive series win tonight, something they've only done once so far in 2012. The Slammers took two of three from Evansville, swept Lake Erie and took two of three from Washington from May 25-June 3. So far the Slammers have swept Schaumburg and swept the Road Warriors over the past two series. Today is the rubber match of the series with Rockford. Joliet is 5-7 in rubber matches so far in 2012.

During the day.

The Slammers have a record of 5-5 in day games this season.

Christensen providing speed, power and defense.

David Christensen tied the franchise record for stolen bases in a game with three in last night's contest. He now has 18 stolen bases overall this year and six since joining the Slammers. Christensen has already smacked three home runs in 20 games with Joliet. He has a total of 12 bombs this year between London and Joliet, the most on the Slammers. He is hitting .278 since joining Joliet; he hit .250 when he was with the Rippers. On defense, his brilliant catch over the Bud Beach wall in the opener of this series was the second time in franchise history a Slammers player has jumped over the Bud Beach wall to take away a home run. Josh Flores did it last year on May 19 against Washington.

Five or more.

Joliet 21-11 when scoring 5 or more runs in a game. They are 13-32 when scoring fewer than 5 runs.

Mr. RBI.

David Fox leads the Slammers with 44 RBI on the season. He has driven in 12 over the past 10 games.

Walk this way.

Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 49 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 31 times in 264 at bats.

First inning success..

The Slammers have scored 50 runs in the first inning, most of any inning this season.

Error indicator.

Joliet is 11-31 in games when they make an error. They are 23-12 in games when they do not.
