Rascals Drop Series to CornBelters

River City Rascals News Release

Normal, Ill. - River City came back twice from one run down in a pitching duel, tying the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning before the CornBelters plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the series from the Rascals in a 4-2 game Sunday night.

River City (36-42) got an infield single from Chris Andreas in the second inning, their lone hit in the first four frames, and found themselves trailing Normal (26-52) after the third inning when former Rascal Ernie Banks drove a two-out single to left for a 1-0 lead that would have been 2-0, but utility player/pitcher Keli'i Zablan, starting in left field because Jeremy Synan and Eric Williams were ill, threw a dart home to cut down the trail runner.

The bottom of the fourth did not start well for the Rascals, committing two errors and allowing and infield single to load the bases with no outs. Tony Marsala pitched out of the jam, inducing a comebacker, pop-up, and groundout to get out of the trouble and shit the momentum to the Rascals.

River City rode that wave to a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth. Andreas singled, went to second on a Matt Serna sacrifice, and scored on Corey Amerson's RBI single, his first professional hit. The lead would not stand for long.

Pat McKenna led off the bottom of the inning with this third homerun in the last two games to give Normal the 2-1 lead but River City responded immediately with a single run in the sixth. Curran Redal bunted his way on the start the inning and after a sac-hit, the second of three on the night, and a fielder's choice, scored on a Charlie Lisk groundout to tie the game at 2-2.

Nick Kennedy pitched a clean sixth inning and got some help from Cory Carusso to get out of the seventh as the Rascal offense had trouble solving veteran Tyler Lavigne (5-7) who struck out eight in eight innings for the CornBelters.

Justin Gill, who earned his first save in game one this season, started the eighth with a walk. A one-out double put runners and second and third before a sharply hit grounder to first brought in the go ahead run as throw from Andreas was late to home plate. With runners at the corners, a suicide squeeze brought in the fourth run of the game before the Rascals went in order in the ninth.

After a league-wide off-day on Monday, the Rascals resume their season at home with a series against the Road Warriors on Tuesday with first pitch set for 7:05.
