MARION, Ill. - Southern Illinois infielder Carlos Mendez hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, propelling the Miners to a 4-2 win against the Gateway Grizzlies Sunday at Rent One Park.

The loss for the Grizzlies gave them their second straight series loss, which is the first time they have dropped back-to-back series in nearly two months.

Southern Illinois (46-32) started the game's scoring with one run on three hits in the first inning, highlighted by a Ken Gregory run-scoring single.

Gateway (45-33) tied the game in the third on an RBI groundout by Jonathan Johnson, which scored Ben Ives, who tripled to lead off the inning.

Southern Illinois starter Daniel Calhoun (6-3) and Gateway starter Brett Zawacki (1-2) dueled in the 1-1 game until the sixth inning, when Zawacki left with two runners on base.

Zac Treece came in to relieve Zawacki and surrendered a game-changing three-run home run to Mendez, giving the Miners the three-run lead.

Zawacki went five-plus innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking three.

Jon Myers paced the Grizzlies offense with a 2-for-4 night.

The Grizzlies enjoy an off day Monday before returning to action Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark for game one of the series against the Washington Wild Things. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT.

Playoff tickets are now on sale through the Grizzlies Ticket Office. To get tickets, call 618.337.3000 or go online to gatewaygrizzlies.com.
