
Miners Take Important Series

Marion, IL - Daniel Calhoun continues to pitch well as he went seven innings and struck out nine batters as the Miners defeated the Grizzlies 4-2 at Rent One Park. The Miners take series two games to one. Calhoun allowed one run off five hits and one walk.
The Miners got on the board first with a RBI single by Ken Gregory off Grizzlies starter Brett Zawacki to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. Gateway tied the game at one in the top of the third inning off Calhoun with a RBI ground out by Jonathan Johnson. Calhoun and Zawacki took over the game after the third inning, only giving up three hits combined the next two innings.
With the game tied up at one in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runners on base with one out, Carlos Mendez hit a three run homerun off Grizzlies reliever Zac Treece to give the Miners a 4-1 one lead. Two of the runs were charged to Zawacki, the other to Treece. For Mendez that was his third home run of the season. All three home runs have been against Gateway.
Nick Cicio pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Miners. Brandon Cunniff earned his second save but gave up a run in the ninth inning. The Miners would win the game 4-2 and take the series at home. With the win, the Miners improve to 46-32 in the Eastern Division and trail Traverse City by four games.
The Miners are off tomorrow and begin a three game set at home against the Evansville Otters on Tuesday. First pitch will get underway at 7:05 pm.
