Attack Powerplay Strikes in Win over Windsor
November 21, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
Bryson Cianfrone scored twice on Saturday night to lead the Owen Sound Attack over the Windsor Spitfires at the WFCU Centre by a score of 3-1.
Owen Sound would capitalize twice on the powerplay, including one of Cianfrone's markers, while Daniel Dekoning turned aside all but one Spitfire shot as the Attack split a pair of weekend road games.
After failing to score in their first game of the weekend in Sarnia, the Attack found their offensive rhythym in Windsor, dealing the Spitfires their first home regulation loss of the season.
Dekoning was a key part of the Attack victory, making 35 saves on the evening, including at least 10 point blank stops on Windsor scoring chances.
Thomas Schemitsch scored the team's first goal in almost 100 minutes of game time by cleaning up the garbage in front of Windsor's goal at 5:25 of the 2nd period. Bryson Cianfrone picked up the lone assist on Schemitsch's goal, which came on the Attack's 2nd Baywest Nissan Powerplay of the evening.
The Attack would then fail to capitalize on a long man advantage after Windsor's Logan Brown was ejected for a slew footing penalty, and the Spitfires would use the momentum gained from their penalty kill to even the game.
Firing a slapshot from the point, Liam Murray found a hole in Attack goaltender Daniel Dekoning to knot the game up at one apiece with 13:46 gone in the middle stanza.
Neither team would find the back of the net again in the 2nd, and head to the 3rd period in search of the game winner.
Josh Sterk would pot the go ahead goal with almost seven minutes on in the game's final frame after banking a centering pass off of a Spitfire's defender in front of the cage.
Ethan Szypula would garner the assist on the play, Owen Sound's 2nd powerplay goal of the game, after forcing a turnover on the Windsor sidewall, allowing Sterk to break free and score his 3rd of the year.
Cianfrone would put an exclamation mark on the win, scoring on a wicked wrister with just over two minutes left on regulation. Nick Suzuki was able to find an open Cianfrone to the side of Windsor's next, and the overage assistant captain would make no mistake.
The pair of goals would be good to earn Cianfrone the honour of Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the Game while Daniel Dekoning's 35 save performance saw him pick up 3rd star honours.
Windsor's Aaron Luchuk rounded out the stars of the game, picking up 2nd star of the night.
The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal would finish off at 36-29 for the home team.
The Attack are off now until Thursday night where they kick off three games in three days with a trip to Barrie to take on the Colts.
Puck drop for that affair is scheduled for 7:30pm and can be watched live on Rogers Local 53, or listened to on 560 CFOS Kia of Owen Sound Terry's Trailer Service Bear Radio.
Owen Sound's next home game is on Saturday, Nov. 28 when they host the London Knights in the annual Bears In Blue fundraiser game in support of the fight against men's cancers.
Tickets for that game, which gets underway at 7:30pm, are available at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com, or by calling 519-371-7452.
