Cormier Shines in 3-2 Loss to Erie

SAGINAW, MI. - The Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Erie Otters on Saturday for the annual Guns & Hoses Classic at The Dow Event Center. The Saginaw Spirit fell short of the Erie Otters by a score of 3-2, thanks to a multi-point performance by Vanya Lodnia and an outstanding performance by Devin Williams.

In the first period, Saginaw's Mike Davies gave the Spirit an early 1-0 lead over the Erie Otters. At 6:11 of the period Kris Bennett and Artem Artemov set up Davies, who notched his first goal with the Saginaw Spirit franchise. The Spirit continued to keep the Otters off the board for a majority of the first period thanks to some impressive defensive play and some superb goaltending by Evan Cormier. A late period penalty on Mike Davies sent the Erie Otters to the power play. As the final moments of the frame were coming to a close, Erie's Vanya Lodnia capitalized on the man advantage and tied the game at one apiece. Shots on goal in the first period favored the Erie Otters, 12-7.

It only took 1:19 in the second period for the Erie Otters to grab hold of their first lead of the night. Erie's Kyle Maksimovich finished off a rebound to give the Otters a 2-1 lead over the Spirit, with the help of Alex DeBrincat and Taylor Raddysh. The Erie Otters outshot the Saginaw Spirit 16-9 in the second period.

The Otters continued their offensive efforts with another early goal to open the third period. At 2:18 of the final frame, Nick Betz beat Cormier to push the Otters ahead of the Spirit 3-1. The Saginaw Spirit were able to net one more tally before the final buzzer as Artem Artemov beat Erie's goaltender Devin Williams at the 14:25 mark, with help from Mike Davies and Kris Bennett. The final score at The Dow Event Center on Saturday night favored the Erie Otters, 3-2. The Otters outshot the Spirit, 40-26.
