Atlanta United FC News Release

ATLANTA - Atlanta United defeated D.C. United 3-1 Saturday night before a crowd of 42,539 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Giorgos Giakoumakis scored his 10th goal of the season, becoming the fastest player in club history to reach the mark and the second player in MLS history to reach 10 goals in under 800 minutes. Andrew Gutman and Tyler Wolff each found the back of the net to extend the team's six-match unbeaten streak while Homegrown midfielder Ajani Fortune made his first MLS start and Ozzie Alonso made his first MLS appearance in more than 14 months after suffering an ACL injury on April 2, 2022.

Atlanta jumped out to an early lead in the 13th minute when Miles Robinson spotted the run of Giakoumakis and played a long ball to send the Greek forward in behind D.C. United's backline. Goalkeeper Tyler Miller came off his line to clear the ball, but whiffed on his sliding challenge as Giakoumakis was left with an empty goal and scored with a low shot from an acute angle, narrowly squeezing it by the near post before a D.C. defender could clear it off the line. Giakoumakis scored his first 10 goals in 766 minutes played, setting the club record. It was Robinson's first assist of the season and the second of his MLS career.

D.C., however, leveled the match in the 27th minute. Following an Atlanta corner kick, D.C United sprang a counter attack when Chris Durkin made a tackle in midfield that put Taxi Fountas in a footrace with Fortune towards goal. Fountas dribbled into the right side of the penalty area and scored with a low shot to the far post.

Atlanta regained the lead in the 49th minute after a brief spell of possession resulted with ball at Almada's feet at the top of the box. The Argentine playmaker dribbled to his left and played a give-and-go with Caleb Wiley before threading a ball for Gutman into the box. Gutman blasted the ball at the back post, aiming for Giakoumakis, but the ball deflected off Miller and into the net for his third goal of the year. Almada earned his team-leading ninth assist of the year and is second in MLS in goal contributions with 16.

Wolff iced the match in the 73rd minute with a third goal. The play began with Amar Sejdic finding Giakoumakis in a pocket of space on the left channel near midfield, who quickly turned and played a through ball for Gutman. The left back dribbled to the edge of the six-yard box before firing a cross to the back post where Wolff's sliding effort turned in his third goal of the season. Giakoumakis picked up his first career assist with the club, while Gutman earned his third of the year.

Atlanta United (7-4-7, 28 points) returns to action when it hosts New York City FC on Wednesday, June 21 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:30 p.m. EDT, MLS Season Pass, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor). All Atlanta United matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription, located on the Apple TV app.
