Inter Miami CF Falls on the Road Against New England Revolution
June 10, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Inter Miami CF News Release
Inter Miami CF (5W-12L-0D, 15 points) fell 3-1 on the road against the New England Revolution on Saturday night. Forward Josef Martínez scored the team's goal on the night and now ranks 10th among the league's all-time leading scorers.
Lineup Notes
Inter Miami lined up with Drake Callender in goal; captain DeAndre Yedlin, Sergii Kryvtsov, Chris McVey and Noah Allen lined up in defense; David Ruiz and Ian Fray were the anchors in midfield with Corentin Jean, Nicolás Stefanelli and Benjamin Cremaschi in front of them; Martínez led the team's attack.
Allen's start marked his first in the 2023 MLS regular season, while Inter Miami II defender Israel Boatwright and midfielder Lawson Sunderland were signed on short-term loan agreements ahead of the match. Additionally, tonight's game saw four Academy products start for the First Team for the first time in Club history.
Match Action
It was the hosts that struck first in the game, with the Revs taking the lead in the 27th minute through a penalty from midfielder Carles Gil. New England was then able to extend their lead in the 34th minute with a header from Matt Polster after a corner kick opportunity for the match to go into the half with a 2-0 scoreline.
The Revs then extended their lead early on in the second half when Bobby Wood sent the ball into the back of the net in the 51st minute.
Inter Miami was then able to shorten the deficit after a penalty was called after second-half substitute Leonardo Campana was brought down inside the box. Martínez then transformed the penalty kick into a goal in the 84th minute for his fourth strike of the campaign. Martínez now has 102 MLS regular season goals and sits 10th in the league's all-time scoring leaders.
Despite the team's efforts during the remaining minutes, the 3-1 scoreline held and the hosts claimed a win.
Post-Match Reaction
"They made the most out of the chances they had and we struggled in the final third," said interim head coach Morales. "The positives to highlight were that the team didn't give up and fought until the end, but surely this isn't what we were looking for, this isn't the result we wanted."
Next Match
Inter Miami will now head into a break before its next match, when it will visit the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park on June 24.
