Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - U.S. Soccer today announced the draw for the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32, which will see Atlanta United enter the tournament against Chattanooga FC on Wednesday, April 15 at Finley Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed on Paramount+.
Atlanta was placed into the Clint Dempsey Group with Charlotte FC, Charlotte Independence (USL League One) and Chattanooga FC (MLS NEXT Pro). If Atlanta wins its Round of 32 match, it will travel to the winner of the Charlotte FC and Charlotte Independence match for the Round of 16, which will be played April 28-29. Due to venue constraints related to the preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Atlanta, Atlanta United is unable to host matches during these two rounds of the U.S. Open Cup. The Round of 32, which features the 16 victors from this week's Second Round action facing off against 16 Major League Soccer (Div. I) clubs, will take place April 14-15. The group of advancing teams includes nine from the USL Championship (Div. II), six from USL League One (Div. III) and one from MLS NEXT Pro (Div. III).
Today's draw saw clubs divided into eight groups of four based on geography. The groups are named for the eight most capped players with the U.S. Men's National Team that have captured a U.S. Open Cup title.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is U.S. Soccer's Club Championship and has crowned a Champion annually since 1914 (with the exception of 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19). The historic tournament is conducted on a single-game, knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer.
It is the longest running national soccer competition in the United States and the world's third longest continuously run national cup tournament. It is the only competition in USA-based team sports where amateurs have the chance to play professionals in direct competition.
