Atlanta United Sets New MLS Attendance Records
October 21, 2018 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United today set new Major League Soccer records with a total home attendance of 901,033 and a single-season average of 53,002 after a crowd of 71,812 packed into Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the team's final 2018 regular season match against Chicago Fire. Both marks surpassed Atlanta's own records set in its inaugural 2017 season.
Sunday's crowd also was the sixth-largest for a single-match in league history. Atlanta owns the top-seven most-attended matches in MLS history. The team's July 15, 2018 match vs Seattle Sounders is the record at 72,243.
The club's season average of 53,002 ranks 17th the world based on the 2017-18 season, ahead of Italy's AC Milan.
The previous total home attendance record was 819,404, which Atlanta exceeded Oct. 6 during its 2-1 win against New England Revolution. The club's average attendance last year was 48,200.
Atlanta first broke the single-match attendance record last season with a crowd of 70,425 on Sept. 16, 2017 against Orlando City SC. The club then broke it again in the 2017 regular season finale against Toronto FC with 71,874. Including Sunday's contest, there have been five matches this season which more than 70,000 fans have attended.
Atlanta also holds the records for the largest crowd at an MLS Cup Playoff match (67,221) and U.S. Open Cup match (41,012).
