Red Bulls Win Fourth Straight, Blank Union, 1-0
October 21, 2018 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York Red Bulls News Release
The New York Red Bulls (21-7-5, 68 pts) strung together their fourth consecutive win as they blanked the Philadelphia Union (15-13-5, 50 pts), 1-0 on Sunday at Talen Energy Stadium. New York remained one point back of Atlanta for the Supporters' Shield and Eastern Conference lead.
In the post-shootout era (since 2000), Atlanta and New York surpassed MLS' single-season wins record with their 21st wins on Sunday. The record was previously held by the 2014 Seattle Sounders and 2018 Toronto.
The Red Bulls tallied their fourth 1-0 road shutout and eighth road victory overall this season. New York's eight road wins tied the franchise's single-season record, previously set back in 2000.
New York recorded a franchise single-season best 14th team clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Philadelphia.
The Red Bulls are unbeaten in 11 of their last 12 matches and have outscored opponents, 19-11.
New York's four-game winning streak is the longest active winning streak in MLS.
The Red Bulls were awarded a penalty kick off their corner kick as a Philadelphia Union player was called for a hand ball inside the box. Kaku tallied his second penalty-kick goal of the season in the 69th minute for the eventual game winner.
Captain Luis Robles recorded two saves for his 13th league shutout and 62nd of his career. Robles moved into a tie with Tony Meola with 62clean sheets for ninth in league history.
Robles also tallied his 100th league win as a goalkeeper. He became the eighth MLS goalkeeper to reach the 100-win plateau.
Kaku converted not only his second penalty-kick attempt but tallied his sixth game-winning goal of 2018.
Bradley Wright-Phillips moved into sole possession in franchise history with his 170th match played as a Red Bull.
Head coach Chris Armas tallied his 11th win as Red Bulls manager in just his 18th match at the helm. Armas has guided New York to a 11-3-3 mark since taken over on July 8.
The Red Bulls are now 28-16-11 all-time in the month of October. New York has scored 92 goals while allowing 68 during the tenth month of the year.
After allowing three goals in back-to-back matches to begin September, the Red Bulls have tallied three clean sheets in the last four games and have outscored their opponents, 8-1.
New York has not allowed a goal in league play against Philadelphia in 360 minutes.
New York aims for their third Supporters' Shield in franchise history on Supporters' Day against Orlando City SC on Sunday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MSG, MSG GO and New York Red Bulls Radio in English on TuneIn.
