Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United picked up a 2-2 draw on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium behind goals from Giorgos Giakoumakis and Saba Lobjanidze. Thiago Almada tied the club's single-season record with his 14th assist on the season.
The hosts got off to the better start as Dallas opened the scoring in the fourth minute through Paul Arriola. Jesus Ferreira won the ball near the end line on the right side of the box and found Arriola with a cutback for a one-timed finish.
Atlanta leveled the match in the 44th minute when Giakoumakis headed home a Almada cross for his 13th goal of the season. Atlanta's No. 10 collected the ball at the top of the box and lofted a cross to the back post where Giakoumakis rose above a Dallas defender and guided his header into the side net. Almada picked up his 14th assist of the season, tying the club's single-season mark.
Lobjanidze gave Atlanta the lead in the 58th minute with a curling left-footed strike into the bottom left corner of the net. Santiago Sosa started the play from midfield, playing a long switch to Lobjanidze on the right wing. The Georgia international dribbled at his defender and into the box before cutting inside on his left foot and firing his shot past a diving Jimmy Maurer.
The lead only lasted a few minutes as Dallas responded quickly with a goal from Bernard Kamungo in the 62nd minute as he ran onto a ball behind Atlanta's back line and chipped the ball over the onrushing Brad Guzan. Dallas thought they had a go-ahead goal late in the match, but VAR ruled Alan Velasco offside in the build up to negate the tally. Atlanta created a couple of chances down the stretch but were unable to find a winner late.
Atlanta United (11-8-9, 42 points) returns to action after the FIFA international break when it hosts Inter Miami CF at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m ET (MLS Season Pass, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor). All Atlanta United matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription, located on the Apple TV app.
