Both teams started the match exchanging possession but it would be the 'Caps who had the first chance of the match in the 14th minute, as Ryan Gauld saw his shot off a free kick saved by NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese.

Fast forward to the 37th minute, Maximiliano Moralez found Andres Jasson at the back post. The NYCFC Homegrown product had a wide open goal to aim at but his effort went well over the 'Caps goal.

The sides would go into the break level.

After the halftime interval, NYCFC would open the scoring through Monsef Bakrar in the 55th minute.

Two minutes later, the Blue and White were awarded a penalty as James Sands brought down Gauld in the box. The Scotsman stepped up and buried his effort into the bottom left corner, scoring his 11th goal of the season across all competitions.

The 'Caps continued to press the home side's backline, with Ryan Raposo whipping a cross into the box for Gauld, who headed the ball narrowly wide of the near post.

NYCFC had a chance to take the lead through Tayvon Grey, as he unleashed a powerful strike that was saved at the near post by Yohei Takaoka.

In the latter stages of the match, Gauld played substitute Sergio Córdova in behind the NYCFC backline. The Venezuelan came close to scoring the winner, but Freese denied the striker with a save to his right. The play was eventually called back for offside.

The 'Caps return to action with a Canadian clash against Toronto FC on Saturday, September 16 as they continue their seven-match road stretch. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. PT live on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV and AM730.
