Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United fell to Charlotte FC 3-1 Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in front of 43,427 fans. Juanjo Purata scored his first goal of the season and Almada added his league-leading seventh assist, but Atlanta was forced to play most of the second half with 10 men after Andrew Gutman was shown a straight red card after video review.
Atlanta created several chances in the opening quarter of an hour as a Brooks Lennon cross was nearly put home by Gutman in the second minute and Caleb Wiley had a chance miss over the bar in the seventh minute. It's best chance in the opening half came in the 17th minute from Luiz Araújo. Thiago Almada intercepted a pass near midfield and quickly found Lennon on the right wing. Lennon immediately threaded a ball to Araújo who was in on goal, but his attempt towards the far post was denied by goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina.
Charlotte found the game's opening goal in the 18th minute from Justin Meram. Ashley Westwood sent a cross from the right flank to the back post where Meram tapped it home.
Out of the half, Westberg appeared to have made a crucial save in the 48th minute to keep the game 1-0. But after video review, Gutman was ruled to have fouled Kamil Jozwiak in the box. Gutman was given a red card and a penalty was awarded to Charlotte. Karol Swiderski stepped up and scored to make it 2-0.
Less than five minutes later, Meram added his second of the night to make it 3-0. Along the right wing, Lindsey played Jozwiak behind Atlanta's defense where the Polish midfielder crossed back into the box and found Meram in space. There, the veteran winger slotted into the far post.
Purata got Atlanta on the board in the 86th minute from a corner kick. Almada swung a ball into the six-yard box that Purata attacked at the near post and headed in.
Atlanta United (5-4-3, 18 points) returns to action when it hosts Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, May 17 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:30 p.m., MLS Season Pass, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor). All Atlanta United matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription, located on the Apple TV app.
