Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
PORTLAND, OR - Vancouver Whitecaps FC fell to their first MLS defeat in more than two months with a 3-1 loss against Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers this Saturday evening at Providence Park.
The first half began quickly for the Timbers, as Claudio Bravo won possession, then passed a ball to forward Franck Boli. His run inside the box concluded with a strike that would put his squad up 1-0 early in the second minute.
After 18 minutes, it was 2-0 for the home side. A succession of volleyed passes ended with Evander lunging a close-range effort in past Yohei Takaoka.
The Blue & White would get back into the match minutes later. A quick-strike build-up saw Ryan Gauld play a through ball to Julian Gressel down the right wing. His cross ended up being deflected into the net for an own goal by Zac McGraw in the 24th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.
After the halftime interval, the home side would regain its two goal cushion within the 54th minute. Midfielder Yimmi Chará sent a ball in to Evander, who turned and struck a low shot just past the arms of Takaoka to make it 3-1.
The 'Caps pushed and pushed the remainder of the match, but the final whistle blew at Providence Park.
Whitecaps FC continue their road trip with a matchup against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium this coming Wednesday, May 17. Following this tilt, the Blue & White are back at BC Place as they host Cascadia rivals Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, May 20 with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
