Around the Horn: Extra Bases Set the Tone in 6-2 Victory
August 26, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
The Birmingham Barons drew first blood, but the Blue Wahoos claimed the lead in the second inning and didn't look back in a 6-2 triumph. Pensacola scored in three separate frames as they battered starter Spencer Arroyo, smacking three doubles and adding a two-run shot off the bat of Mike Costanzo to put the match out of reach. The Barons only moved one runner to third base but sent two around the bases as Dan Black and Cody Puckett shelled solo home runs. Lee Hyde extended his scoreless streak to 30.1 consecutive innings with a flawless ninth inning. Here are the highlights as we go Around the Horn:
FOR THE RECORD: Ryan LaMarre established a team record and came within two games of his professional best as he extended his hitting streak to ten games. LaMarre is the first Wahoos player with a streak above nine games this season and ties for third all-time; the outfielder is batting 14-for-39 (.359) during that span. Travis Mattair also set the franchise record for total bases, surpassing LaMarre's mark of 170 set last season.
MARATHON MAN: Josh Smith notched his thirteenth quality start and added to his league-leading strikeout stash with a seven-inning start. After surrendering a solo home run to Dan Black in the second inning, Smith allowed just one Barons baserunner past first base and struck out five batters. The Barons managed only two hits against Smith, who set a Blue Wahoos record when he started his twenty-seventh game.
