With the seed, the Rattlers will play their first round game at home where they have won six straight. Their opponent will be the No. 6 seed Utah Blaze, a team they have already beaten twice this year. The Blaze are led by former Ratter head coach Danny White, who boasts a 20-10 playoff record while in Arizona, including two championships. Ratter Head Coach Gene Nudo, who was an assistant in 1995, seeks his first-ever playoff win as a head coach. QB Sherdrick Bonner, who has won 17 playoff games in his 13-year career, finished the season with franchise-high 3,991 passing yards, while nearly matching his career mark in TD passes (88) with 83. WR/LB Randy Gatewood, who was the team's top target, had career-highs in receiving yards (1,175), receptions (89) and touchdown catches (35). The "Ironman of the Year" candidate set a career mark in tackles, leading the team with 64. OS Damien Groce is another key offensive weapon, accumulating 59 receptions for 857 yards and 21 touchdowns in just 12 games. Defensively, DS Joe Todd finished one pass deflection shy of the franchise record with 26 and DS Clarence Lawson was second on the team in tackles with 55.

RATTLER HEAD COACH: Gene Nudo enters his first season as head coach to become the third head coach in franchise history. Nudo joined the Rattlers coaching staff in 1995 as an assistant head coach before becoming a part of the team's front office in 1996. A true pioneer in the AFL, Nudo coached the first-ever Arena Football games in Rockford, Ill. (1986) as well as its "Showcase Game" in Rosemont, Ill. (1987). He would later serve as the Director of Player Personnel and assistant coach for the Chicago Bruisers (1987-88), helping guide them to a berth in ArenaBowl II.

THIS WEEK'S QUOTES:

Rattler head coach Gene Nudo on last week's loss versus Colorado: "It was a real disappointment to drop another one on the road. On the bright side, we came out of the game pretty good health-wise and had some positives on offense and in our kicking game. Hopefully, it was more of a case where our guys were overlooking this game and looking towards the playoffs. We played a very formidable team and it showed. We need to bounce back with a good home performance."

Nudo on Utah's late run: "They have brought in a veteran quarterback that gets the ball out on time and has helped them win. Winning four of their last five, they are a much different team than they were the last time we played them. They have beaten some really improved teams down the stretch. We are expecting them to play as tough as they have been lately."

Nudo on what it takes to win in the playoffs: "It is going to take some consistent play and keeping our mistakes down. We have to play better, particularly on the road if we are going to advance. We need to take one game at a time and get a good effort out on offense and defense. The team that keeps their turnovers down will be in a good position to win."

13 = 8 = GREAT: Arizona quarterback Sherdrick Bonner is one of the league's best all-time field generals, as he was honored as eighth-greatest on the league's top 20 of all-time. In addition to owning every Rattler passing record, he is steadily working his way up the league charts. Currently, Bonner ranks in the top four in four different all-time passing stats with 36,933 passing yards (No. 3 on the AFL career chart), 746 touchdowns (No. 4), 4,769 pass attempts (No. 3), and 2,916 completions (No. 3). SCORING MACHINE: WR/DB Randy Gatewood scored a touchdown in 13 of his 16 games last season. He has scored touchdowns in 14 of 16 games this season and has a total of 203 touchdowns in his career as a Rattler.

PLAYERS TO WATCH THIS WEEK:

Utah OS Siaha Burley: The former Rattler set the AFL's record for an expansion team player in receptions (136) and touchdowns (44). Burley had seven catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns in his first meeting against his former team and three catches for 41 yards and a score in their second meeting. If Utah is going to put up enough points to pull off a road upset, they will need Burley to put up a big performance like he did the first time in Arizona. Meanwhile, the Rattlers hope to contain Burley like they did in their most recent meeting in Utah.

Arizona QB Sherdrick Bonner: Bonner is in search of his 17th playoff victory and looks to do it against the coach whom he won all of those games under. Since returning from a shoulder injury, which caused him to miss a game in Week 2, the 13-year veteran has thrown for 3,856 yards and 81 TD's in his last 14 games. Despite having a career-year, throwing for a franchise-high 3,991 yards, Bonner also set a team single-season high with 16 interceptions. If the Rattlers are going to go a perfect three-for-three on the year against the Blaze, Bonner will not be able to afford costly mistakes.
LAST GAME:
CRUSH CLINCH HOME FIELD IN 59-35 WIN OVER ARIZONA

Denver, Colo. (May 12, 2006) - In a game that meant much more to the Crush, Colorado (11-5) clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a 59-35 victory over the Arizona Rattlers (8-8) in front of 15,261 at the Pepsi Center.

The Rattlers came into the game unable to move up or down from their No. 3 seed in the American Conference playoff race, while the Crush needed a victory to solidify the No. 1 spot.

Colorado did just that by scoring on each of their first nine possessions, including eight touchdowns. Six of the scores were by offensive specialist Damien Harrell, who was named "Offensive Player of the Game" with five catches-all for scores, for 61 yards. His 60 touchdown catches on the season set a new AFL single-season record.

Colorado was able to jump out to a 14-0 lead after the game's first two plays from scrimmage.

The first Crush points came on a 16-yard touchdown reception by Harrell on Colorado's first offensive play. The play was set up by a 42-yard return by wide receiver/defensive back Willis Marshall on the game's opening kickoff.

On the Rattlers' first offensive play, quarterback Sherdrick Bonner threw his sixteenth interception of the year, which was taken back for a score by Marshall that put the Crush up two touchdowns, less than two minutes into the contest.

Marshall earned "Ironman of the Game" honors with nine catches for 75 yards on offense and two tackles, along with his interception on defense.

The Rattlers responded with their first score of the game, a three- yard touchdown from Bonner to wide receiver/defensive back Randy Gatewood, but Colorado answered when quarterback John Dutton found Harrell for a second time to give them a 21-7 lead with 3:37 left in the first quarter.

The two teams would trade touchdowns to start the second quarter. Rattler fullback/linebacker Bo Kelly ran in his sixth rushing of the touchdown of the season, while Dutton answered with a two-yard score to wide receiver/defensive back Ahmad Hawkins to give Colorado a 28-14 lead.

After a touchdown grab by offensive specialist Damien Groce which cut the Rattler deficit back to seven, it seemed like the Arizona defense had recorded a stop when defensive specialist Joe Todd caused Crush receiver Andy McCullough to fumble after a catch near the goaline. Colorado benefited from the near turnover when Harrell jumped on it for his third touchdown of the game.

Harrell added a fourth score in the first half with another touchdown reception after a successful onside kick to put the Crush up 42-21 at halftime.

"He's the best guy at his position in the league," said Rattler head coach Gene Nudo. "He showed us that tonight."

Arizona opened the third quarter with two consecutive scores, including a 42-yard Bonner-to-Gatewood touchdown strike on the first play of the half, but Colorado answered with a touchdown and a field goal to go up 52-35 heading into the final quarter.

The Rattlers had a chance to cut the deficit to ten while facing a first-and-goal on their first possession of the fourth quarter, but the drive ended on a botched snap on a 35-yard field goal attempt that was recovered by Gary Kral.

Harrell caught his sixth touchdown of the night on the ensuing possession to extend the Crush lead to 59-35.

Rattler backup Travis Cole came in to relieve Bonner late in the fourth quarter. He was two-of-six for 19 yards.

Arizona, who will play the No. 6 seed, awaits outcomes of several games in the league's final day of the regular season (tomorrow) before they find out who it will be.

"We are looking forward to playing at home next week," said Nudo. "But, if we are thinking about championship, we've got to figure out how to win on the road."

LAST MEETING WITH UTAH
BONNER WINS 100th, RATTLERS PUT OUT BLAZE, 64-52

Salt Lake City, Utah (April 7, 2006) - In a game that saw five lead changes and two ties, quarterback Sherdrick Bonner recorded his 100th victory, while wide receiver/defensive back Randy Gatewood scored a career-high seven touchdowns in a 64-52 Arizona victory over the Utah Blaze in front of 14,651 at the Delta Center.

The win gave the Rattlers (6-5) a half-game lead over Las Vegas for first place in the Western Division, while the Blaze dropped to 3-8.

Bonner, who is the first-ever AFL quarterback to record 100 wins, finished 25-of-49 for 345 yards and eight touchdowns. Gatewood earned "Offensive Player of the Game" honors with 13 catches for 149 yards. His seven touchdowns tied a Rattler single-game record which was held by Calvin Schexnayder.

"I couldn't have accomplished this feat without guys like Randy around me," said the 12-year veteran Bonner. "I am truly blessed to be able to play this long and have the guys I have had around me."

Down by six with under a minute left, the Blaze faced a fourth-and-goal. They attempted a trick play when quarterback Jason Gesser threw a pass to wide receiver/defensive back Orshawante Braynt behind the line of scrimmage. Braynt tried to throw the ball back to Gesser, but it fell incomplete.

"We knew all week that they were going to try some trickery," said Rattler head coach Gene Nudo. "It wasn't a pretty game, but I'm glad we hung in there to win it."

The Blaze struck first when Gesser found wide receiver/linebacker Tom Pace for a 23-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

The Rattlers responded on their second play from scrimmage, when Gatewood caught a 33-yard score to tie the game at seven, less than three minutes into the contest.

Pace scored again on Utah's next series, this time on a run from three yards out to give the Blaze a 14-7 lead. The Blaze extended their lead to 14 when wide receiver/defensive back Justin Taplin, who spent training camp with Arizona this season, intercepted a Bonner pass and took it into the endzone from 13 yards out.

After the turnover, Arizona countered with 22 consecutive points to take a 29-21 lead with 12:40 left in the first half.

The run started when Bonner found Gatewood a second time from nine yards out to cut the Blaze lead to eight, 21-13, after Gary Kral's extra point attempt failed.

On the ensuing possession, the Rattlers forced Utah into a 58-yard field goal attempt that Rattler offensive defensive/lineman Kelvin Ingram blocked in the endzone. After the ball deflected off of Ingram's arm, it hit the back wall for a Rattler safety.

Following the safety, Bonner was able to find Gatewood for a third touchdown, this time from six yards out, to give the Rattlers their first lead, 22-21.

The Rattlers scored for a fourth-straight time when wide receiver/linebacker Wilson Thomas recovered Kral's kickoff that bounced off the net and through the hands of Utah offensive specialist Siaha Burley in the endzone to put the Rattlers up eight, 29-21.

The Blaze answered with a touchdown and a stop, but was unable to take the lead when fullback/linebacker Kautai Olevao attempted a short run inside the Rattler 10-yard line. On the play, Olevao tried to push a stopped pile forward, but Rattler defensive specialist Clarence Lawson alertly stripped the ball out of his hands to give Arizona the ball back.

The Rattlers could not capitalize on the turnover, as Kral attempted a 54-yard field goal that was blocked. The ball squirted forward to the Arizona eight-yard line when Utah recovered it. On the next play, Olevao redeemed himself by rushing in a touchdown from eight yards out to give the Blaze the lead back, 34-29, with under a minute left in the second quarter.

The points proved to be the final ones of the half, as Kral attempted a 40-yard field goal that missed as the second quarter expired.

Utah recorded their third stop in a row at the start of the second half, forcing the Rattlers to go four-and-out. They upped their lead to eight, 37-29, when kicker Steve Vietich connected on an 18-yard field goal.

Gatewood's fourth touchdown of the game was a spectacular 27-yard catch to bring Arizona within one with seven minutes left in the third. After the score, the Rattlers defense came to life, recording their second safety when fullback/linebacker tackled Gesser in the endzone to give Arizona the lead back, 38-37.

Despite getting possession back, the Rattlers couldn't build on their lead, as Bonner was intercepted by wide receiver/defensive back Sale Key. The Blaze wasted no time to take advantage of the turnover, as Gesser found Burley for a 14-yard score to give Utah the lead back. Key capped the possession by pulling in a two-point conversion to put the Blaze up 45-38.

Bonner and Gatewood hooked up for a fifth time to start the fourth quarter in which the Rattlers scored 26 points. The touchdown tied the game at 45.

The Rattlers took the lead for a second time when Gatewood caught his sixth touchdown pass after a Lawson interception.

The two teams would trade scores on the next two possessions, but the Rattlers could only extend their lead to six after a touchdown by offensive specialist Damien Groce, as Kral missed his second extra point to keep the Rattler lead at 58-52 with 3:20 left in the game.

After the Rattlers stopped Utah on the fourth-and-goal, Bonner sealed the victory with a seven-yard touchdown to Gatewood for his seventh one of the night.

"It was a night that I won't forget," said Gatewood. "Thankfully we were able to win. We need to keep this kind of momentum going."

Lawson, who filled in for Joe Todd, took "Defensive Player of the Game" honors and Thomas was named the game's "Ironman".
