Nashville Kats News Release

NASHVILLE (Feb. 28, 2006) - Nashville Kats wide receiver/defensive back Darryl Hammond was named the AFL Ironman Player of the Week for his outstanding effort in last Saturday's 66-50 victory over the Tampa Bay Storm. The award is given to the player with the best two-way performance of the week.

The 16-year veteran (the longest running tenure in AFL history) had his best game of the season, logging two TD grabs, one interception, one pass break-up and four tackles. He also added a six yard kickoff-return and one tackle-for-loss.

The 39-year-old Hammond (6-3, 220, Virginia) announced before the season that this would be his final year in the AFL. He becomes the fourth Kats player to earn league player of the week honors so far this season.

Hammond joined San Jose's quarter back Mark Grieb (Offensive Player of the Week) and Dallas' DS Jermaine Jones (ADT Defensive Player of the Week) as players of the week for last weekend's games.

The Kats (8-8) take on the Chicago Rush (7-9) this Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT in the American Conference First-Round Wild-Card game. This will be Hammond's final game at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
