San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 16, 2006) - San Jose quarterback MARK GRIEB, who broke his own Arena Football League record for passing yards in a season during a win over Columbus on May 13, has been named the AFL's Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced today.

Grieb, who is in his ninth AFL season and eighth with the SaberCats, threw for 302 yards and eight touchdowns in San Jose's 68-47 win over the Destroyers last Saturday night. The UC Davis product ended the 2006 regular season with 4,841 passing yards, breaking his 2005 league record of 4,796.

Behind Grieb's league-best eighth 300-yard passing game of the year, San Jose ended the campaign with its 7th consecutive victory and denied the Destroyers their first postseason appearance.

The award marks the fifth time Grieb has been named Offensive Player of the Week in his career and is the fourth weekly honor for a SaberCat this year. WR/DB Charles Pauley in Week 3 (ironman), Rookie OS Ben Nelson in Week 10 (offensive) and DS Clevan Thomas in Week 12 (defensive) are San Jose's other weekly award winners.

The SaberCats begin their drive to ArenaBowl XX Las Vegas when they host an American Conference semifinal playoff game at 12:30 p.m. (PT) on either Saturday, May 27 or Sunday, May 28. The exact day will be determined later this week.

Tickets for the first playoff game, which will be priced the same as a regular season game, go on sale May 16 and can be purchased through any Northern California Ticketmaster outlet, online at ticketmaster.com or at the HP Pavilion box office.
