AFL names players of the week

NEW YORK - Nashville Kats WR/LB DARRYL HAMMOND, San Jose SaberCats QB MARK GRIEB and Dallas Desperados DS JERMAINE JONES have been named Ironman, Offensive and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 16 of the 2006 season.

IRONMAN: Hammond (6-3, 220, Virginia), now in his 16th AFL season, recorded three catches for 45 yards and two touchdowns and one kickoff return for six yards in Nashville's 66-50 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday night. He added 4.0 tackles, including 1.0 tackles-for-loss, one interception and one pass breakup on defense as the Kats clinched a home Wild Card playoff game.

OFFENSIVE: Grieb (6-3, 219, UC Davis), who is in his ninth AFL season, completed 26-of-42 passes for 311 yards with eight touchdowns, including four in the second half, and one interception in San Jose's 68-47 win over Columbus on Saturday. Grieb also broke his own single-season AFL record for passing yards. He finished the 2006 regular season with 4,841 yards, topping his record-setting 2005 total of 4,796 yards.

ADT DEFENSIVE: Jones (5-9, 187, Northwestern State (La.), who is in his fourth AFL season, became the only player in 2006 to record four takeaways in one game. He had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in Dallas' 82-38 Eastern Division win over New York on Saturday. Jones added 2.0 total tackles, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

Ironman of the Week candidates included: Austin's Sedrick Robinson, Chicago' s DeJuan Alfonzo, Colorado's Willis Marshall, Dallas' Troy Mason, Philadelphia's Wes Ours, San Jose's James Roe and Barry Wagner and Utah's Tom Pace.

Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Austin's Dane Krager, Colorado's John Dutton, Dallas' Clint Dolezel and Utah's Siaha Burley and Andy Kelly.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Colorado's Rashad Floyd, Chicago's Dennison Robinson, Los Angeles' Silas Demary, Philadelphia' s Eddie Moten and San Jose's Wes Stephens.
