June 15, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans bounced back and grabbed their first win of the week with a 1-0 win over the Fredericksburg Nationals on Wednesday night. With the win and Columbia's loss, the Pelicans' magic number drops to six with a two-game lead in the Carolina League South. The Nationals dropped to 28-29 on the season.
The star of the night was Michael Arias after striking out a career-high 10 through five shutout innings with just two hits allowed and a walk. The win went to Erian Rodriguez (4-3) with three scoreless frames in relief and five more strikeouts. Angel Gonzalez came in for the save by pitching a scoreless ninth. It was the third shutout for the Pelicans this year.
Hits were hard to come by but Jefferson Rojas (2-4) paced the offense with a multi-hit game. Pedro Ramirez (0-3, RBI) brought the only run of the game home on an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Fredericksburg was held to just five hits, all singles with Zion Pettigrew (2-3) posting the only multi-hit performance. The Nationals left six on base and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
It was a battle of the starters as Bryan Caceres lasted five innings without allowing a run with four walks and five strikeouts. The loss went to Pedro Gonzalez (3-2) after allowing the one run to cross in his two innings.
Both starters dealt through five innings with the Pelicans finally breaking through in the bottom of the sixth. After Rojas hit a single with Cristian Hernandez stealing on the pitch and both runners moving to second and third, Ramirez grounded a ball to first as Hernandez broke for the plate. The throw was in time but Hernandez avoided the tag on the slide to score the only run of the game.
Fredericksburg had a chance with runners on the corners, but Rodriguez struck out Cortland Lawson to end the frame.
The tying run was also left on base in the top of the ninth as Gonzalez forced a flyout from Sammy Infante to end it.
The series continues on Thursday night with the Pelicans and Nationals meeting for game three on Thursday night.
