Another Late Lead Blown

For the second time in the last three nights the Calgary Vipers blew an eighth inning lead and lost 7-6 to the Edmonton Capitals before 2239 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. In a back and forth game the Vipers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth only to have the Capitals respond for a 5-3 advantage in the bottom of the frame. Calgary answered with three runs in the seventh for a 6-5 lead before Edmonton took the lead for good in the eighth with two tallies. With the loss the Snakes have dropped three straight and fall to 21-10 on the second half for a four game lead in the North Division. Overall the Vipers are now 44-30 on the Golden Baseball League season.

Jorge Vasquez (3-1) took the loss after facing four batters in the eighth and not recording an out while allowing two runs to score. Also out of the bullpen Monte Mansfield threw an inning and two-thirds without giving up a run while Daniel Morari struck out the only batter he faced to limit the damage in the sixth inning.

Edmonton opened the scoring in the second inning when Larry Bigbie singled, Alex Prieto advanced the runner to second base with a sacrifice bunt, and Matt Rogelstad collected a run batted in base hit for a 1-0 advantage.

Calgary quickly tied the game in the third as with two outs Jonny Kaplan singled, a balk advanced the runner to second base, and Guillermo Reyes knocked one in with a base knock.

The Vipers took the lead at 3-1 in the sixth frame when with two outs Kevin Price was hit by a pitch, Drew Miller singled, and both Luis Taveras and Caonabo Cosme collected RBI base hits.

The Capitals responded right away in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead as Nick Valdez walked, Alex Chavez singled, Ryan Stevenson doubled in a run, Enrique Cruz singled in two, and Prieto delivered a RBI base knock for a 5-3 advantage.

Calgary continued the back and forth scoring in the seventh when Kaplan doubled, Reyes walked, Kaplan scored when Reyes delayed in a rundown after a groundout, and Julio Ramirez launched a go-ahead two run homer for his 14th of the season and a 6-5 lead.

Edmonton grabbed the lead back in the eighth frame as Cruz and Tom Collaro doubled for the tying run followed by walks to Bigbie, Prieto, and Rogelstad with the bases loaded for a 7-6 score.

This six-game series in Edmonton against the Capitals continues with a double-header on Sunday August 22nd at 2:00 PM MDT followed by the series conclusion on Monday August 23rd at 7:00 PM MDT.

The Snakes return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday August 26th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Victoria Seals for Chick Wagon Night, Friday August 27th at 7:05 PM MDT for Small Town Spirit Night, Saturday August 28th at 5:05 PM MDT for Winnipeg Night, and Sunday August 29th at 1:35 PM MDT for Fan Appreciation Day.
